For those who might be "scared" of this trailer...

Now one could say with quite certainty that the majority of Trek fans, as evidenced by those on this very message board, are of the liberal or leftist persuasion, no? And these are the people who always tout "change" as something to be embraced and/or sought after. Yet, when it comes to their baby, Star Trek, or even Star "Han Shot First" Wars, "change" seems to freak them out.

Is this trailer eluding to a radical departure of Roddenberry's rather boring "canon" (if you wanna call it that)? Yes, and I say thank God for that. Because what J.J. Abrams is doing here, IMO, is breathing some much needed life into a franchise that has been DOA since the end of DS9 in '99. I might actually get interested in the franchise again after this film.

A sparkly trailer doesn't mean new life has been breathed into the franchise.

There as many things to be worried about as there is to be excited about IMO.

My main concern is that they are trying to change Star Trek into something it's not supposed to be.

I'm glad you're interested in the film, as I am a big fan of the upcoming movie, but bashing Liberals and Democrats is for TNZ, Johnny.

I disagree. And if you find the rest of the franchise so boring, why the hell do you keep watching it and hanging out at a Star Trek board?

Based on some of the discussions we've been having in this very forum, I wouldn't say that's certain at all.

And I don't think that the lines between those resisting change or favoring change or being open-minded about it either way are drawn quite so neatly as you seem to be implying they are.

I suppose we'll have to see how that turns out. However, I've been asking people to leave the political angles for forums more appropriate to such discussions. We're talking about the movie in here, and we've got quite enough wrangling over canon, continuity, Kirk's uniform tunic (or absence thereof) and Uhura's (presumably Starfleet-issue) bra to keep us all very well-occupied without bringing in any of the politics you so dearly love to inject into non-political subjects.

Happy to see the movie attracting your attention and all, Johnny, but based on your opening paragraph, I can't say I see that you're primarily interested in discussing it, so I'll just close this now.
