Oh what a masterpiece! This is one of my favorite episodes of the series. The music score is awesome and only Season 1 can best it. Its got a wonderful romance story, and McCoy is diagnosed with a terminal disease yet is cured from it either in this episode or was it in a later episode? I felt the female actor did an excellent job and it was a shame not to see her in another episode whatever her name was. Thoughts?

It's also that rare episode in which Kirk encounters a computer-god ruling a civilization and does not meddle with the state of affairs.

Except to force the forbidden knowledge upon the high priestess that their world is a spaceship.

(Of course, the computer-god in this case also takes a live-and-let-live attitude toward the Enterprise, which can't be said of, say, Landru or Vaal.)

Except for zapping the landing party upon arrival and trying to roast them later, along with the high priestess. The Oracle's willful ignorance also threatened a colony world—so not a direct threat to the Enterprise, no.

Other than that, and killing the old man and torturing McCoy into unconsciousness, not a violent dictatorship masquerading as a religion.

I haven't watched this one for ages, but it used to be one of my favorites for all the reasons you cite. Woodville was incredibly gorgeous, as well!

I'll have to watch it again soon. I've been somewhat loathe to do so, because as I get older I find I have less tolerance for overtly sentimental entertainment that I used to love. I guess I'm just getting more curmudgeonly.

As scripted AND filmed--when Spock goes back to clear the affected "tube" he is stung by a hornet on his right index finger. The hornet's nest was in fact what caused the tube to malfunction.

Both before and after Nimoy goes into the engine area off camera--his right index finger sports some makeup and prosthetics of a hugely swollen finger.

In the early section of the scene he simply holds it off camera--in the later portion of the scene it can be glimpsed a few times.

The bigger the TV you are watching it on the easier it is to see it. I am watching a 32" set right now and can see it. People with larger sets can see it more clearly for sure.

At the split second before Kirk turns from the main console to the rear controls, Spock is in fact holding up the finger for Kirk to see.

You got to be handy with the pause button, but there's no doubt.
