Howdy!
Something that maybe should have been a story in TNG.
Let's say that the Romulans and the Federation have to have a sit down about territory. The Romulans bring over a contigency. One of the group is a sub lieutentent named Ta'Ma. For the feeling of peace, the Romulans have a limited use and walk around of the ship.
There is a female Romulan named Ta'Ma. There is a male lieutenant named Smith on board. Ta'Ma and Smith get to know each other on ship and like each other. Like turns into love. Smith makes love to Ta'Ma. Smith accepts the violence that is part of the Romulan love ritual, it is not violent for violent sake, but hown Romulans make love.
After the ritual, the two fall in love, they want to be married. Of course in any cross cultural marriage that are enemies, neither side will accept the marriage. While on leave, Lt. Smith marries Ta'Ma on some nuetral planet. There sexual union is violent, beautiful and lovely.
Not right away, but after two Earth years, Ta'Ma and Smith decide to join and become husband and wife. Ta'Ma is tired of the military aspect of her culture and desires children, and she loves Smith, and Smith loves her, and Lt. Smith wants to be with her.
Capt. Picard finds out about the marriage love affair between the two parties, what should he do? Smith loves Ta'Ma. The Romulans do not know of the marriage. Does Capt. Picard force Smith to choose between his wife and Starfleet? What if Smith tells Picard that they are married and Ta'Ma is with child? The Romulans will not accept her? Does Starfleet? Or do they drum out Lt. Smth out for having sexual reoations with a Romulan, an enemy ofthe Federation? Does the Federation have the right to choose how Smith and Ta'Ma raise their child? What of Lt. Smith wants to raise the child with the acknowledgement of her mother's culture? Even if the culture is an enemy of the Federation?
What happens?
