Fleet Command

T'Girl

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Who was in command of the fleet of starships sent to Vulcan in Star Trek Eleven?

Your initial though might be that Captain Pike was, but was he? Despite being "the newest flagship," there's no clear indication that the Enterprise is in command of the fleet sent to Vulcan. Pike would appear to be in command of just his one ship. Sulu at one point does report that the fleet is ready for warp, and Pike then orders a course set for Vulcan. But is Pike sending a general order to the fleet, or merely giving a order to his one helmsman? Only Sulu confirms the order and not the other ships in the fleet.

When Kirk brings the possibility of a Romulan trap to Pike attention, and prior to realizing that communications were being interfered with, Pike doesn't directly order shields up on the entire fleet, but instead attempts to contact the just the USS Truman.

Was the USS Truman the actual command ship, with a unknown Commodore or Admiral in charge?

The fleets in Best of Both World and First Contact were both commanded (initially) by a Admiral. The war game fleet in Ultimate Computer was commanded by a commodore.

:)

Thats a good question.

Whoever was the fleet commander he was probably killed with the first wawe.

1. This should be in the STXI+ forum

2. Does it matter?

3. If Pike wasn't in command, why wasn't the fleet commander commanding from the flagship, Enterprise?

Commodore Matt Decker, USS Constellation.

And when his ship was severely crippled by the Narada, he beamed his entire crew down to Vulcan in an ill-faited attempt to save them. (The altered timeline trying to repair itself, I guess. :p )

Hmm. I never got the impression that Pike was the fleet commander, just in command of his own ship. When Pike decided to fly over to the Narada, there was no mention of who would take over his fleet commander duties. The fleet continued to receive orders after Pike went MIA. I don't remember hearing anything at any point about a fleet commander. It just never came up.

True. However, the use of the term "flagship" has always been somewhat unique in the Trekverse... more in the sense of a honorary title.

What fleet did Picard command exactly? ;)

In the alternate universe, perhaps every ship in Starfleet, instead of being a "Starship," is a "Flagship."

:)

Was putting this in "General Trek Discussion" a trick to get me to read about "Trek XI", or whatever it's known as?

I placed this in the general forum because I included references to fleet commands in TOS and TNG, as well as the base question concerning ST Eleven. You never know where these discussions will go, and I didn't necessarily want to restrict this to events in the one movie.

:)

Still, if the Enterprise was truly the flagship of that fleet, then it probably should have been the first ship to launch into warp, not the last.

If I would guess, I'd say that whatever that captain's name was aboard the U.S.S. Truman, he was probably the fleet commander, since Pike asks to communicate with him.

It might make more sense for the flagship to be in the middle of the formation, and not at it's lead.

Just rewatched the leaving Earth orbit scene, and the Enterprise would seem to be the last ship expected to enter warp.

I'm not sure which of the other ships is supposed to be the Truman. Dukhat, what's the name of the ship you're using as your avatar?

:)

T'Girl,

The ship CGI models did not have the same names as what was mentioned in the script/movie. Like with ST:FC, ILM put the same names on the same types of ships. Therefore, there were three Newtons, three Mayflowers, and one Armstrong.

Well, theres the fleet of 20 Starships in the second part of "Redemption" and its mentioned in "Chain of Command II" that the Enterprise-D (under Edward Jellico, but I think the identity of the Captain is just quibbling) would become the Flagship of a fleet positioned at Minos Korva in the event that the Cardassians invaded...

Thats one and a half fleets off the top of my head.

Plus he commanded a fleeet in The Buried Age too.

Maybe the Enterprise had not been proclaimed officialy flagship yet in a ceremony.

After the Admiral's ship (not flagship by name) was destroyed in FC, Picard took command of the fleet.
