Flags and insignia

What do you do with some free days? Draw logos of course!

Today's subject is flags. First of all, the flags of United Earth, in chronological order (fictional). It starts with the current United Nations flag. Then comes the ENT flag. I'm not a big fan at all of that strange United Earth emblem they used on that show, although I must admit the colors do work on the flag.

Next is something I sort of designed myself, based on the ENT flag and the "The Cage"/WNMHGB Earth logo . The colors are gold on very pale sky blue.

The SFTM flag is in spirit very similar to the UN flag, with a silver globe on a sky blue. It's also very long, for some reason.

Lastly the oddest flag. It's based on a few glimpes of a design seen in TUC. I'm not quite sure what to do with this symbol. It seems to be some attempt at an Earth style that is recognizably different from the usual blue and white, which is more linked to the Federation in Star Trek.

The only canon thing there would be the 'American' insignia. I've tried to link these Earth-centric designs to the later movie-era "Earthbase"/"Sol Sector" uniform patches.

The Andorian flag is a mix of the ENT style and the original multicolor flag for 'Epsilon Indi'. The Centauri symbols are more or less as they appear in the SFTM, although the logo has been modified to be a bit clearer, and the purple is very very dark to give it a more 'regal' tone.

Next, I'd like to take a shot at the only use of flags in TOS that I know of, in "The Menagerie": http://tos.trekcore.com/hd/albums/1x11hd/themenageriepart1hd311.jpg

I've followed some discussions on this, and it seems likely that the flag on the left is nothing more than the flag of Cuba (seen most clearly here, compare to this). But I have no idea what that other flag could be.

Although that curve looks especially like it could be part of the Enterprise delta (and I guess it could be that, in-universe), it's probably some other flag they had lying around.

Oh, and if anyone has ANY information on ANY flag seen in TUC (from the auctions or something), I'd like to know

WOW! Very nicely done. It's good to see some of those old FJ designs colored in from the color keys that they had in the original black and white pages (that's the same as "monochrome" for you young whipper-snappers)

Boy, I bet some cold warriors would've had a field day with that back in the '60's.

Maybe you could use the visible colors from "The Menagerie" as a kind of background for each respective flag, and superimpose the UFP seal on one flag and the Starfleet seal on the other. (Another possibility I'm fond of would be to use the arrowhead badge symbol as the logo for "the First Fleet", and put it on a Starfleet flag.

I really like what you've done with, in particular, the Andorian flag. I played around with a similar combining of ENT and FJ elements for the Tellarites a while back:

Today, it's back to the 2160s for the first Federation symbol:

... which is the one designed by Franz Joseph and seen on the Federation Council building. The colors are based on the Flag (and a bit on aridas's flag up there).

(and WhatTheFont!? found a font called Stirling that looks quite a bit like FJ's hand-drawn "UFP" letters).

The above image has been updated with an interpretation of the 'Movie style' UFP seal seen in ENT: "These are the Voyages..", as a Coalition of Planets seal later replaced by the FJ version. The 24th century seal seen in TNG would go back to this arrangement of (major) stars.

well my crossover was more set in the post TNG but i did come up with some uniform insignia that would fit in its TOS era. But for now heres the Starfleet symbol used in its TMP era and beyond. Hope no-one hates me for this ^_^; btw im about to be 23 years old im not some punk kid.

Does anyone recognize the symbol on the flag on the far left on this image? I have a strange feeling I've seen it somewhere before, but I can't quite place it. Maybe I am imagining things.

After reviewing images from "And the Children Shall Lead", I think I have to conclude that that silly red banner was not a proper Federation flag. Instead, I've gone for the movie era flags for the TOS period as well. It forms a better continuity between elements of ENT and TNG. You just have to swap the TNG-era flag seen on the Mirror-Defiant with the STIII version and it's all fixed

To put the red pennant in some perspective, I've added a few random pennants, the bottom row being banners of the Big Four (Earth, Vulcan, Tellar and Andor). I imagine that the Starnes Expedition flew the banner of some Federation Council commission, with the highly stylized "UFP" coming from the contemporary Council insignia.

Harry, you know the Seal of the Federation President seen in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and DS9's "Homefront"/"Paradise Lost?" Would you be interested in making a version of that which replaces the words "OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT" with the words "FEDERATION COUNCIL" and one with the words "PALAIS DE LA CONCORDE?" We might be able to use those as supplemental images on Memory Beta...

I have to admit to liking the way Masao uses that pennant. It seems to be a jack, and dovetails nicely with the stylized pennants affixed to the ships' hulls.

That would make the Starnes Expedition a Starfleet-sponsored and supported effort, like those the various navies have undertaken to the poles and elsewhere. Civilian-staffed, and Starfleet-supported.

I don't know if you've seen this flag, but it was in the Camp Khitomer scene. I saw it, and liked it a lot. Thanks to Explorer of Okudagrams.com for the rendering of the flag.
