First words of Doctor Who

Shatnertage

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Instead of looking all this up for myself, I figured I'd start a thread and get some more conversation going. We've already got a thread about the final words of each doctor. What about the first words of each one?

It doesn't have to be just the first sentence--I say it can include the whole exchange.

To be honest, the only ones that stick out to me right now are "Change, my dear, and not a moment too soon," and "I'm not ginger."

not his exact first words, but one of the first things the fourth Doctor said was...'I tell you, Brigadier, the Brontosaurus is large and placid. And stupid!'

no it's: "Hello, I'm {unintelligible}..." gulps, and adds, "New teeth. That's weird. So, where was I?"
"Oh, that's right," he grins, "Barcelona!"

Eight: "Who am I?"

"Change, my dear, and not a moment too soon,"

That one always makes me cringe. Maybe he means "One more moment and I wouldn't have been able to regenerate," but it always sounds to me like "That Doctor sucked ass so it's a good thing I'm here now." And we all know how that turned out.

PERI: "D-Doctor?"

SIXTH DOC: "You were expecting someone else?"

"Change, my dear, and not a moment too soon,"

That one always makes me cringe. Maybe he means "One more moment and I wouldn't have been able to regenerate," but it always sounds to me like "That Doctor sucked ass so it's a good thing I'm here now."

Beat me to it by one-minute! :techman:

And yeah, I think that's the intention of the phrase. The Sixth Doctor didn't particularly care for his previous incarnation. He even talks about that in his first episode ("...I had a feckless charm which simply wasn't me...")

While not Colin's fault it does seem slighly disengenuous to diss the Doctor before hand. (and I'm not just saying that cos it was Davison, honest)

Eh, I don't mind it if it's done in a characteristic jokingly sly manner, ala' Doctor crossovers (Scarecrow, Dandy, Clown, etc.). But, it might have been a bit too forceful and immediate with it being the first few seconds we see the new guy. I guess it'd be like Smith going "Whew, glad he's gone...I was getting downright maudlin..." when he first climbs out of the Police Box in Eleventh Hour. Still, analyzing his first line doesn't even scratch the surface of what went wrong with the Colin Baker Years...

Yeah, he was completely correct. We got two seasons of better Doctor Who than any of Davison's three as a whole, and a Doctor with a personality who didn't spend the whole time getting shouted down like a weedy twat by a bolshy Aussie.

Well like I say I wouldn't have wanted Sly to go on about being grateful to get rid of the coat, or Peter to say he was glad he wasn't all teeth and curls anymore.

I always saw the change line as more a case of the Sixth Doctor's confidence and being glad to be him, rather than "thank god I'm not him any more". But the Fifth Doctor was all about the baggage really. His last word and thought was "Adric", something he never really got over. I think it's why the Fifth Doctor was always quite protective of Nyssa and Tegan, even though he never really acted too much like he liked either of them or Adric an awful lot. He felt very responsible.

Well, McCoy did say "I'm glad that in this regeneration I've regained my haute couture'..." or, fashion sense. So, one could stretch that as a backhanded insult.

Either way, I don't think it's an honest insult towards the previous actor, as much as it is the new Doctor liking who he is at that moment ("All that matters is who I am right now, okay?!"-Ninth Doctor/End of the World)

Third is: "Shoes".

I think the fifth is: "Hello, I'm the Doctor. Or I will be if this regeneration turns out."

Seventh is: "Where are we,Mel?Well, that was a nice nap."

As far as the "change, my dear" thing, I thought that was more about the defensive posture the show assumed at about that time. When you do a whole season in which the Doctor himself is on trial, it's like you've internalized all of the criticism.

And it sort of sounds like they're telling the fans, "Wow, last season sucked. This will be much better." Of course, if the fans really thought it sucked, they wouldn't be watching it.

It was like when a new management team took over a certain casino, and the CEO went on and on about how tacky and awful the place looked. But what about all of the loyal customers who've been coming for years? You're basically telling them they've got no taste. That may or may not be true, but it's hardly the kind of thing you'll go on about.

The irony of the statement is that a lot of people consider "Caves" one of the best episodes of Doctor Who. I have not heard that said about the one that followed it.

yeah and we also got the show in hiatus for the 2 years and the actor sacked.

yep that was really good.

I've always taken it that the Doctor was referring to the fact it was line ball whether it would be too late to regenerate not a slight on the 5th doctor but then I don't have my head shoved up my arse.
