hey hey,
just wanted to say that i just watched star trek II for the first time. It was FuKhan good! I saw The Motion Picture last night, and it was boring as hell. thats my .02![]()
BOTH are great films -- in the same way ALIEN and ALIENS are both great films. They are different kinds of films -- one cerebral, the other more straight up action adventure (I am talking about both the first two Trek films AND the first two ALIEN films).
I wouldn't expect someone weened on computer games to be able to sit still for ST:TMP though...the attention span can't handle it.
And that's a sad commentary.

That really doesn't have anything to do with it. It's all personal preference; there were plenty of people back in the 70's who thought it was boring too.
While Quasar's comment was a bit of a broad generalization, your response hasn't really helped. What he said at least had a touch of truth about it — the effect of video games, MTV, and classic Sesame Street on attention span has long been a matter of debate in both academic and nonacademic circles — whereas your 'analogous response' was not so much analogous as it was nonsensical.wow. all i did was state my opinion and made a pun.BOTH are great films -- in the same way ALIEN and ALIENS are both great films. And that's a sad commentary.i dont know it would prompt such a harsh reaction.
i figure this is an analogous response: i wouldn't expect a virgin to sit through ST:TWOK though...he would be too busy fantasizing about khan's breasts.
im also not sure what more sad. someones opinion on a movie, or some guy who doesnt agree that insults him beyond the veil of a computer screen...

Wikipedia is not exactly an accurate source for information of this kind. TMP didn't underperform: it was the #3 moneymaker of films released in 1979, IIRC. The film's actual budget wasn't quite that high, as Paramount included all the expenses for previous attempts to ressurrect the show in the stated budget, etc.from wikipedia: After the release of The Motion Picture, executive producer Gene Roddenberry wrote his own sequel. In his plot, the crew of the Enterprise travel back in time to set right a corrupted time line after Klingons use the Guardian of Forever to prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy.[14][15] This was rejected by Paramount executives, who blamed the poor performance and inflated budget ($46 million) of the first movie on its plodding pace and the constant rewrites Roddenberry demanded.[16] As a consequence, Roddenberry was removed from the production and, according to Shatner, "kicked upstairs" to the ceremonial position of executive consultant.[17]

To me TWOK is bye far the best star trek movie to date, there are a few plot holes that i can live with, but overall a well balanced film it has a little bit of everything i liked about trek covered.
