Well I for one am happy with the originals sets I purchased cheap a few weeks ago. When these come down to the $30 I may buy them. I have seen many comparison shots and there not much of a difference (besides the new effects) to warrant repurchasing.

I'm not saying you shouldn't be happy with your DVDs, but the new versions are simply beautiful. The colors are far richer and more realistic and the image is generally much sharper and cleaner.

Well worth it, although obviously your mileage may vary.

Yes the colors are richer but from many of the comparison shots I have seen, the blacks are very dark and distort some of the background detail. Heres a link from a hobby site that discusses this.

web page You may have to register to view them.

I just dont think the upgrade in film quality is all that great for a repurchase. The effects would really be the only reason, for me anyways.

Dar70, I'd think twice before drawing any conclusion from the screen caps published in Hobby Talk. They aren't very good.

The complaint for those of you who don't want to register is that the blacks are "crushed". The sublte changes in blacks become one as the detail goes away. Most laptop screens crush the shit out of blacks. They all become dark grey.

I can't say I've seen this problem, Dar, but tell you what I'll do. I'll watch City On The Edge of Forever and look for it. My Panasonic plasma should show it if it exists.

One beef: Maybe it's my system but there is a lot of difference between the volume of the episodes and the volume during the menu. The episodes are a lot quieter. I have to turn up the volume a lot when I start playing an episode and turn it down when I stop. Anybody else hearing this?

Yep, the discs default to the "True HD" audio track. Just switch it to the Dolby track and it'll be fine. But you have to do this every time you pop in the disc. Do you have one of the lower priced Hitachi players? I heard the first generation players don't decode that audio, but they finxed it for the other generation players.

Okay, my error. The HD-A2 first gen Toshiba players do support TrueHD audio, but your sound system has to be able to decode it. That's probably your issue, if you bought your system a little while back.

Or if you own a DLP TV (like me) the picture has a bit of a delay since it's a projection set and the sound has to go through the TV and not from the player to the receiver if you want the sound to synch up.

So, I lose out on True HD sound.

My receiver supports TrueHD audio but for some reason I can't get it to kick in, probably because I'm using a 5.1 rather than a 7.1 set-up. My Yamaha RX-V1800 instead goes into DTS. I checked the owner's manual and that's normal. I haven't researched it further. As the good Professor pointed out, we're dealing with basically a mono audio track, anyway.

I don't think this volume level problem is related to this, though. I think it's a mastering thing but I could be wrong. It's a minor issue, anyway, no more annoying than adjusting the volume for an overly loud commercial.

Can someone tell me if the episodes are truly in tact? I'm sure they will be more complete then the broadcasts, but has anyone noticed if any scenes are still cut?

specifically, there is an effects shot in Balance of Terror near the end after the Enterprise fires on the Romulan ship. we see the romulan ship hanging in space. This shot was cut from the broadcast, and I'm curious to know if they bothered to replace the shot with cgi for the dvd release.

Yeah its there, where the romulan ship drifts on the viewscreen before before it self destructs.
