I did a search for this link and didn't get any results; apologies if I've been beaten to it.

The conclusion:

And you know what? As dark as it is, it’s fun. You could liken JJ’s Trek films to the Iron Man films, although again, this is darker territory here – a perfect blend of action, humanity and humour.

At one moment, I became annoyed by Bones’ puns – one rolling in after another. The moment I had that thought, Kirk interrupts, telling Bones he’ll boot him off the ship if he continues.

And like Bones, you don’t want to be booted off this ride. This is a lovely sci-fi action film. Chances are, it won’t hit you as hard as the 2009 film, but it further develops the characters you know and it feels a little as though you’re coming home.

As for the hardcore fans (I’m somewhere in between – TNG was my thing growing up), I think you’ll like it. I saw Into Darkness with the president of AusTrek, the Australian Star Trek Club. Afterwards, he was grinning ear to ear.

So is he effin' Khan or not?!?!?!

Do you mean, is Harrison inserting his Ceti Eel into Khan? Is he planting his space seed? Is his Genesis torpedo on a build up to detonation? I too would like to know these things.

Anyway, good review. It's positive but not gushing and non-critical, so it's trustworthy, and it provides a nice overview of what to expect tonally without giving anything significant away. If the rest of the reviews are similar to this, we should be in for an entertaining ride.

Personally I DO NOT want him to be Khan.

I also think the VERY strange people who were saying, after the '09 film came out, "Well we HAVE to have Khan NEXT!!!" were beyond idiots.

So we have basically a NEW ST film series, but we should retread every story beat from thirty years ago?!? Does that mean #4 features whales? The film after that should feature "God" at the centre of the galaxy?!?!

RIDICULOUS notion.

It's a bloody great big universe out there. Besides, they HAVE NOT done "Space Seed" yet, so how can there be a Khan?

I am PRAYING it is not Khan.

A representative from Paramount Pictures politely asked that we didn’t reveal any major spoilers in our reviews, and I’m not going to. It’s a much more enjoyable ride that way for all of us

Who does paramount think they are? This is ridiculous

Third half?

I have only just recently heard about this IGN site.

Is this usual for them?!?

A studio trying to build up excitement and anticipation for one of their upcoming tent-pole films by asking reviewers not to give too much away?

Spoilers usually don't bother me or dim my excitement for a film I want to see (unless they're bad spoilers), but it's the filmmaker's and studio's prerogative what they want to release and when they want to release it, and it comes off as pretty entitled to get angry about it like they owe you something.

IGN has been around for a long time. No, it is not usual for them to make that kind of goof. The editor must have been "testing", ie playing, too many video games that day instead of proofing articles. lol.

There are good reasons you haven't heard much about them.

Amateur night.

Amongst Internet "film critics," that's saying a lot.

Why ridiculous? It's pretty damned nice of them to keep spoilers under control. There will be plenty out there already and I would prefer to see the damned film and discover stuff along the way - as storytellers would want you to do. I also like to read reviews, just to see what others thought of the film, but not have major plot points given away. What's the point of waiting 4 years and then reading all the secrets weeks before seeing the movie? I don't get it. It's like 8 year olds looking for Christmas presents days before the holiday. Savor the discovery and get maximum enjoyment out of the unfolding of the story. We only get that experience once with each film. Why ruin it?

Thank you, Paramount.

One of the difficulties presented by the 2009 film is that Pine's Nu-Kirk got a promotion to Captain that he didn't earn through experience. One heroic act got him the Center Chair that Shatner's TOS Kirk won through study and experience.

I think Abrams and his writers got blowback from the Trek and Fanboy community on that. Hardcore Trekkies told Orci, et al, that Shatner's Kirk didn't get command of the Enterprise until he was 35, a more traditional age for a really young "Horatio Hornblower" type Captain. Before that, TOS-Kirk had served on the Farragut and another ship whose name escapes me.

So Abrams is forced to dial young Pine back to a more realistic timeline, I suspect, making this a "coming of age" film. Cumberbatch is the foil against which Nu-Kirk tests himself. Whether Cumberbatch is Khan or not is the McGuffin in the film.

We'll see when the spoilers come out.

Other sub-plots suffer a far worse fate, with Zoe Saldana's Uhura demoted to whining comic-relief.

That's JJ Abrams and the High Court everyone. Leading Star Trek all the way back to the 1960s. God, I hope ign.com is exaggerating.
