Finland isn't always a frozen winterland.

Do people think it's always cold and winter in Finland? I've gotten the impression people think it's always cold winter here. That's not the case. For some reason I want to tell people that Finland isn't a winter wonderland every day of the year.

There are four seasons, summer, fall, winter and spring. Around where I live in central Finland there are big differences between seasons. In winter it's cold and a lot of snow. In summer it's warm and green. In winter sun doesn't appear much but in summer sun shines about 24/7 at middle of summer. Here are few pictures that I've taken over the years at summer from around the town I live in.

Lovely country. Certainly didn't think it was always snowing there. I'm always blown away at the assumptions people make.

Very nice. It looks similar to the Canadian province where I live (Alberta), at least in the regions that aren't in the foothills or the Rocky Mountains.

Though we did have snow until about mid-May this year...

If memory serves there were some snowflakes in May this year but not enough to cover the ground.
Finland and Canada are both quite high on the world map, I guess our climates have something in common.

Having played Skyrim for 1100 hours, I know that northern lands are not just ice and snow. It looks very pretty.

Heh, I know the feeling. A similar stereotype is shared with Canada. That first shot actually looks like one of our local lakes, which also has a small island in the middle.

I haven't been to Finland but I've been to Sweden. It was warm in the middle of the summer. But I guess slightly more of Finland is above the arctic circle.

I’ve always wanted to go there, looks fantastic! Thanks!!

I’m surprised no one has posted this yet... (Apologies, of course!!) ;)

The land of Korpiklaani and Nightwish. ;)

Not been there yet, I did visit Sweden, not far up though, Lund is quite far south.

Is that island of yours also man made? The one in the first picture is built for swans decades ago. =)

Up north we're pretty close with Sweden when it comes to latitude but Sweden goes much further south.

Not that I know of. We're known as a city surrounded by many different lakes though, and it's actually quite a bit bigger. I should have taken a picture today because I was hiking and was at an overlook looking towards it.

I was thinking of taking fresh pictures for this thread some day. Feel free to post some for Finland/Canada comparison. =)

Finland doesn't exist.

Finland, too good to be true?

Yeah, I might do that next time I'm on that particular trail. Maybe next week. Do you have beavers or any particular equivalent? There are quite a lot of beaver dams around the trails I use.

For now, these will have to do. These were taken on a very popular trail they call The Crack. You hike and it it gradually gets steeper until you come to a large crack in a rock which you climb through and up onto the top to get a magnificent view.

And then actually on the same property I originally talked about, overlooking a different area:

There are beavers around here. Apparently they were hunted into extinction in 1800s and later brought back from somewhere else.
The picture in the quote looks like it could be taken from Finland.

Maybe he was thinking of Belgium...? Belgium is not a country, it's two radically different provinces shoved together by treaty.
