Finding a Literary Agent

Are there any writers out there who might be able to offer some suggestions in weeding out the exploitative or ineffectual from the competent?

If it matters, it would be non-fiction writing.

Most sources will tell you to pick up a copy of The Writer's Market and start there.

However, it may be just as effective (or moreso) to simply go to their website. I bought the paper version and ended up not using it at all, in favor of the website which is more convenient.

The hard-copy Writer's Market book does offer some helpful advice as to writing query letters and the like! But, you can get just as helpful advice for free online, so in that respect it's still questionable.

Did you find an agent there?

No, but I was able to get rejected by 16 agents in record time using the website versus if I had done it via postal mail.

I was shopping a fiction novel, you might have better luck at non-fiction from what I've read, or so the Writer's Market seemed to imply.

At this point I myself have decided to just publish my novel online, eventually. I figure I'll post a few chapters a week in a serialized format with an option to buy the entire thing in a hard copy from one of those print-by-demand services.

I have even secured a domain name for it! www.serializedfictiononline.com. I have plans for it! Maybe! Is there a market for this? I dunno!

But first, I'm going to get my personal website website up and running. ETA June 2010.

I appreciate the reference, but I think I'd rather go with an option that has worked for someone. :)

I don't know how many published nonfic writers we have here. Nonfiction is a totally different animal from, say, novels.
