Final One Sheet? Non-Geek Advertising?

Is there going to be a final one sheet poster? A good one, maybe like the old school 80's trek and star wars films. So far there has not been an actual poster, just a bunch of pretty boring Photoshoped headshots. A little dull in my opinion. There has to be a great poster to be a companion to the amazing final trailer we just saw.

Also, They have to amp up the non-geek advertising - posters, billboards etc cause most joe six packs are not online checking out viral marketing. It can backfire badly as we have just seen the Watchmen's second box-office weekend. Selling to just to geek community is a sure way to get a big opening but it's the general public that keeps a movie making money.

This film has a real chance to make a heap of money but the advertising has to be to the non-geeks from now one and via non-geek methods, not relying on internet buzz or internet advertising, as it really does not work long term, i.e. watchmen, V for vendetta, SNAP, grindhouse, cloverfield etc etc.

It's been almost exclusively "non-geek" advertising. Almost all of the interest is being driven by the trailers. As was Watchmen's, so I'm not sure what your point is.

A Super Bowl spot is virtually the definition of big-time non-geek advertising.

And it was virtually IGNORED by the press.

Really?

So far the response amongst media critics in both the mainstream and entertainment press) is mostly positive for the new Star Trek spot.
(ranked Trek #1 movie spot that ‘kicked ass’)
It’s still amazing to me just how much of the general public doesn’t know a new Star Trek movie is about to be released. There were a few people at the Super Bowl party I was attending who didn’t know until they saw the trailer for the first time during yesterday’s game. The approval was pretty much universal - the ad kicks serious ass.
- Los Angeles Examiner
(ranks Trek as one of two "Movie We Most Want to See")
With only a few seconds to judge by, here’s the four-words-or-less early review of the “Star Trek” prequel: Spock, wow! Kirk, maybe.
- Detroit Free Press
(ranks Trek as "Most fascinating peek at a flick")
"Kirk and Spock look pretty hot."
- Seattle Post
"Star Trek" looks reeeeeally good. The trailer’s a little frantic, but I understand trying to sell as many money shots as possible to show that this is not a TV movie. Even the biggest of the prior theatrical films was always hampered by a near-TV budget, and as a result, "Star Trek" was never a must-see for anyone who wasn’t already a hardcore fan. By selling this as a new jumping-in point for audiences, and by emphasizing the sheer scale of the adventure, I think they’re getting across the message that this is "Star Trek" for everyone, not just for the devoted, and that should serve them well this summer.

(ranking Trek 3rd best movie commercial)
The new Star Trek movie trailer is creating a little bit of an uproar among some Star Trek purists that don’t like the new look. J.J. Abrams version of Star Trek is definitely not your daddy’s Star Trek. In fact, the Star Trek movie trailer looks more like a Star Wars movie than a Star Trek movie. That being said, I know I’m going to be in line at the theater the first day this movie comes out. While it might not be the Star Trek I’m used to, it looks like it could be a very entertaining version of Young Star Trek. Favorite line from the Star Trek trailer was “You can settle for an ordinary life. I dare you to do better.”
- ComicBook.com
Paramount’s "Star Trek" and DreamWorks’ "Transformers" sequel provided the most impressive adrenaline rush…
- Variety
The movie trailers were pretty good overall. Star Trek may have been the best, and I say this NOT being a trekkie. I just think J.J. Abrams has the golden touch, and the new trailer showed Karl Urban as Bones McCoy. Karl Urban=BAMF.
- Daily Kansan
There were also a lot of ads for upcoming movies, most of which looked bad, although the new "Star Trek" and the Pixar film "Up" look promising. A "Monsters vs. Aliens" commercial in 3D was fun, assuming you brought a pair of old-school 3-D glasses to your Super Bowl party.
- San Francisco Chronicle
(Rates Trek (out of 10) Entertainment: 8 Selling: 8 Overall: 8)
It is just a teaser, but it gives you enough of the flavor of the old show meets new technology in J.J. Abrams movie imagination of the beginnings of the original Star Trek Crew. Makes me want to see it.
- Associated Content
"Star Trek" maintained it’s place on my ‘most anticipated’ list. Even with my high expectations for the movie, I still really liked the preview. Zachary Quinto (Sylar on "Heroes") looked fantastic as Spock.
- Film Fodder
…was shocked to see that there was plenty of new and updated footage. The TV spot for Star Trek (shown during the Super Bowl) gives some new dialogue from JT Kirk, shows the introduction of Bones and Kirk, displays Sulu’s (John Cho) fighting skills, blurs through a bit more of that bar fight Kirk gets into, and then shows off some updated special effects. Oh yeah, and this time it looks like San Francisco comes under attack.

UPDATE: more positive comments
Absolutely cannot wait for Star Trek to be pretty, exciting, and sexy again.
- BoingBoing
Although shorter in length than the previous two minute trailer, the new Super Bowl 30-second trailer was still enough to whet our collective appetites for the new J.J. Abrams vision of Star Trek coming later this year.

"Star Trek 2nd Most Memorable Super Bowl Movie Spot"
http://trekmovie.com/2009/02/04/star-trek-commercial-2nd-most-memorable-super-bowl-movie-spot/

Don't you understand anything about the media? The ones that agree with me (it's NOT the other way around) are right, and the ones that differ are all stupid idiots who are stupid heads. Obviously the media that chose to report on Star Trek represent the unimportant and tiniest minority! And the ones that chose not to report on it are the real media.

So is there going to be a final one sheet or not - that was the most important part of my question.

I live in Australia and with two months till opening we have no posters, no billboards, no media reporting on the film.

It's possible there may not be one that comes out until a few weeks to a month before release. Likewise, it's not unusual for their to be all sorts of different versions for various countries.

I really hope to high hell they do a glorious old-style poster, and soon.

I've been very under whelmed by the posters thus far.

Especially after the first poster from comic-con back in 2007, was it? The logo on the classic uniform colors. That was a very teasing first step, and since then, it's been so colorless and bland. STAR TREK text on blank backgrounds. B&W cast posters. mono-color 4-cast member posters.

Give us something that harkens back to... frak, even Nemesis had better posters than this film! And that's saying something, because after First Contact, the Trek posters got sucky (INS, NEM)

Give us something that harkens back to TMP, TWOK, TUC. C'mon!

Vinyl's dead, didn't you know? :p
Bah! Not as far as I'm concerned, it isn't. :p

On posters:

The impression I get so far is that everything has been pretty carefully timed for optimum impact. I had guessed a few weeks back that we'd see the Official Marquee Poster about a month before the movie opened, and think it could go as much as two weeks earlier or a week later. Whether that turns out to be accurate here in the U.S. only time will tell. For all I know, it could be (and probably is) completely different in Oz.

Wait and see sounds the best bet.

There does seem to be less advertising for this one. I mean I remember Insurrection being on the local news, but that was primarily due to the mountain scenes being filmed near here.

*snip for space*

OK, within the context of film ads it was well received, but the day after the superbowl when I looked at the ad analysis articles (such as on MSNBC) there were NO mentions of the movie ads, just the beer ads, the car ads, etc.

Since this film is so dependent on the non-fan "mainstream" crowd for it's box, I would think that the lack of response OUTSIDE the film buffs and sci fi-ers would be discoruaging.

When First Contact came out, my first confirmed look at the new Enterprise was on an oversized banner poster over the gas pumps at Git-n-Go.

There are posters at the cinemas. The Village I went to see Watchmen at had the Kirk poster.

And as for media, I have read a couple of comments in The Age (Melbourne) referring to how impressive the trailers have been.

My local cinema (NSW Central Coast) has nothing, but then they do seem to cater for the type of audience that wants to see 'Mall Cop', 'Witch Mountain' and 'Pink Panther 2', not necessarily bad films but not exactly high on the mental stimulation scale either.

Actually, you've given me an idea: if there is a poster/s, I might ask them if I can have one when the film's runi s over.

my question then is was any of other movie trailer talked about.

that it got talked about in the list posted above is pretty good for what then was a movie several months away from coming out.

i noticed that trek movie reports that both kellogg and burger king are getting ready to start their promotions so we may start to see a lot more stuff.

i have seen a picture of one of those huge standing lobby displays that was in a movie theatre in the east but i cant find an image of it to post here.
