Final Mission: Arrow? What arrow?

Yeah, this is a good one. If you don't know about it, I suggest you try and get hold of a copy of Phil Farrand's 'Nitpickers' books (he's done them for TOS, TNG, and DS9) - he talks about all this kind of stuff in his book and it's probably the funniest set of books I've ever read.

thanks,I'll look it up
I'm not usually a nitpicker, but this just jumped out at me and made me chuckle a bit.
Not that it takes away from the enjoyment of the show :-)

...On the other hand, they did say they were heading for the mountains. There would be nothing of interest or value in the direction of the blue arrow - but also no particular reason why they should rigidly walk in a straight line towards those mountains, if the sand was firmer in some other direction or something.

Even out in a desert, you don't navigate by "dead reckoning", trying to walk in a straight line. That's the surest way to end up walking in circles. What you do is find a spot in the horizon that marks your next destination, and then take whichever path is the easiest for reaching that spot. In this case, it would be the mountains...
