It's when you "accidentally" switch the first letters of two adjacent words with one another, which tends to create comical incidences.

Harry Kim.

Karry Him.

Gods above!!!

His own damn name is a barely disguised literary device!

Kim was designed to be the mentally crippled dog faced runt everyone had to help along through the day to day shite because he couldn't tread water well because of the weight of his own inadequacies dragging him down.

O? You say that this is a coincidence?

Everyone had to "carry him".

I sat through seven years of hand holding and coddling.

He was a burden and an albatross.

They carried him because that was his destiny.

I think one of the reasons why they kept him is that they didn't want to lose the asian demographic.

Actually, I recall Garrett Wang actually commenting on this too, in Season Three when they were looking for someone to kill off it was down between him and Jennifer Lien to be launched out the Torpedo Tube. The only thing that saved him was he was one of People magazine's 50 most beautiful people that year.

Let me first state that I actually like Harry Kim.

OK, he isn't my main favorite, in fact he's one of the least favorite characters in my personal list.

And I do find him a rather weak character, the weakest among the Voyager main characters.

However, I do like him in a way. He's nice and friendly and he's a good sidekick to Tom in some episodes. Not to mention that he is better in the books where he's actually doing something.

So I have no intention to bash him or join in to some "Kim bashing" as well.

Still, Guy Gardener's post gave me the laugh of the day.

"Carry Him" was actually funny.

But when you mention the albatross, it could actually have been the reason for keeping him. You know what happened in that old poem, don't you? The curse when that guy shot the albatross.

Iron Maiden has made a magnificant song about that old poem. It's called "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner" and tells the story about the albatross, the mariner and the curse.

Or to quote lead singer Bruce Dickinson when he introduced the song in one of the band's concerts: "This is a song about what you not shall do if a bird s**ts on your head!"

I still think we missed an opportunity to have Trek's first gay lead in Harry Kim.

Sounds great in principal, but I just wouldn't trust the Voyager writers with something like that. Though I do wonder if there were discussions about going down that route with his unrequited love for Tom Paris. The last time I saw Caretaker I noticed a couple of moments.

DS9 could probably have done it more believably, as they could have brought in a recurring character.

I don't know if mainstream US television was ready for a strong gay character in the mid-nineties. Any future series could and probably should have a go.

It really is astounding that Trek has had no major gay canon characters. LGT/Other characters are so commonplace in TrekLit it really seems odd - you'd think the canon creators would be a little embarrassed by now .

Jake Sisko should have been gay - there's a great scene in one episode where he comes out... as someone who doesn't want to be a Starfleet officer. A subtle parallel there perhaps.

I think it could have made for an interesting aspect to the character, and wouldn't have changed anything much. Just the hot Dabo girls he dated would have become hot Dabo boys.
