I've been a bad Trekkie and haven't been paying attention to a thing about this new movie. Since I don't have a lot of time to read every last thread about the movie around here I was wondering if anybody would like to fill me in on the basics (so I can get properly righteous & p'ed off about every little detail like a good Trekker )

All I know is that it's young Kirk & Spock and that the young Spock is being played by that psycho guy off Heroes.

Rumors, and a bit of leakage-

Romulans decide to alter history by taking James Kirk out of the mix.

Spock (24th century variety, it seems) follows them back, apparently foiling several different attempts on their part to alter the timeline.

Naturally, in the end our hero triumphs, and all is as it should be...almost.

Reports are that the TOS Enterprise may end up looking just a tiny bit different in the final outcome, but the actor playing Chekov reports they've already filmed a "final scene" showing the familiar crew (with new actors playing them) on the bridge together, 'in the red, blue and gold'.

A report from a recent "toy fair" says that toys related to the movie apparently include action figures wearing the original series uniforms.

I seem to recall James Cawley (Kirk in the NEW VOYAGES fan films) saying he's seen the new uniforms (they asked him to appear in the film as a "extra" or something), and that they're spot on with the originals.

At least some things may not be changed, but again, note that in the trekmovie.com writeup, it seems the original timeline will be held to, so any visual changes may be minor.

Personally, I'm boycotting if Chekov's first appearance isn't in a really bad Beatles wig.

Leonard Nimoy is getting one last crack at playing Spock, so that will be fun. Zach Quinto (psycho guy from Heroes) will steal the show as (younger) Spock. Chris Pine as Kirk will probably do well. They really messed up casting Scotty but I think the others will do okay.

There will be Romulans, and hopefully they will be handled well for a change. Ditto for the time travel. Eric Bana is the villain, and he's always bored me, but he'll probably be killed at the end of this movie (aren't they always?) so who really cares?

They've cast an immense variety of characters - Spock's parents (Ben Cross and Winona Ryder, weird but appropriate), Kirk's parents, Kirk's brother, Spock as a kid (who could double as Sylar in Heroes flashbacks, get his agent on the phone!), bunch of other people I can't recall but nobody from DS9 (bastards! they have time travel, what's the problem?!?) So the fanboy/girl crowd are being catered to, to some degree.

Opinions are many and varied regarding the reborn Enterprise. I don't care about what the Enterprise looks like, other than that it shouldn't be a garbage scow, so you'll have to find out just how big an atrocity it is from someone else.

Other than that, we wait and see. I'm pretty hopeful but maybe that's because I've only intermittently paid attention to the news and not delved too much into the debates.

Well Lady C. Seems the studios are putting Trek in the big summer of '09 big box-office fight. The new Trek film is big budget, big cast, and helmed by the J.J. Abrams crew and friends. They are creating a whole new thing. I find that damn exciting. When was the last time Trek was a contender?

They really messed up casting Scotty but I think the others will do okay.

Probably when "First Contact" came out, or before that maybe with "The Voyage Home" (that did the best box office didn't it?)
I guess it's nice to see such support but those pesky general public will decide on whether it really is a contender or not.
