Feelings on the removal of the EU?

I'm disappointed that we'll never see characters like Thrawn and Mara Jade in a movie or show. Aside from the Thrawn trilogy and some of the comics I don't really miss the old EU, and they couldn't do a live action version of Zahn's novels at this point. But I still wish they'd tried to work in some stuff from them, like the use of the Marg-Sable maneuver in The Clone Wars. I'm still going to TFA on opening night, but wonder whether Disney's decision to wipe the slate clean effected anyone else's ticket-buying decision.

No, it just seems unlikely. I'm glad Daala is a part of the new EU, but I wouldn't expect Disney to use many other characters exclusive to the old EU.

I'd be surprised if Thrawn never shows up in the new EU. He's a character easier to put in in a fashion similar to his original form than, say, Mara Jade.

My only contact with the EU was listening to the audiobooks of the Thrawn trilogy, the Darth Bane trilogy, Revan & Darth Plagueis. I enjoyed all of them very much & I may read or listen to more in the future.

That said, I don't really care about the removal. I'll still be there to see TFA as soon as I can.

Did you listen to the abridged versions of the Thrawn trilogy that were narrated by Anthony Daniels and Dennis Lawson or the unabridged versions read by Marc Thompson which came out a couple years ago? Apparently there was another unabridged version that I wasn't aware of until yesterday.

I listened to the unabridged versions by Marc Thompson, it was labeled the 20th Anniversary Edition, if I remember right. That guy did a really really good job.

I started reading the EU with Splinter of the Minds Eye and the Marvel comics back in the 1970's, thoroughly enjoyed the Thrawn novels when they came out and stuck with the EU until I admitted to myself that it was no longer worth reading during the Vong invasion.

I was very pleased that they've binned it and started again. I'd held out hope that the new EU would be a fresh approach and better quality - it's apparently the same editors and authors and no improvement.

I'm very glad the new films disregard the old EU though...

Very nice, I made the favorite audiobooks thread in large part to sing his praises, but figured not many here bother with the audio versions. I'm listening to the "behind the scenes" which has clips from Heir to the Empire with Zahn commenting on reasons for making the choices that he did now actually. It's pretty interesting. I particularly like his bit about work problems always coming to mind at 3 AM inspiring Luke's first scene.

I can't vote in this poll, because my opinion is half-way in between the 2nd and 3rd option.

There's a good bit from the EU that I would like to see worked back into the current canon: Thrawn, Mara Jade, the characters from the Rogue Squadron series of books. The Maw Installation and related material. The newer TIE- and -wing series ships. They don't have to be exactly the same, and they could just be cameo'd or name dropped, but an appearance that is respectful (if not identical) to the original ideas involved would be nice.

There's also a good bit I could do without ever seeing again: The Yuuzhan Vong, for example. Boring, boring, depressing, boring, blah. Anakin, Jacen, and Jaina Solo, and Ben Skywalker - feh.

But if none of the former and/or all of the latter appear, it won't keep me from watching or reading new stuff, as long as it is well done.

It's really striking now how few quality stories there were that centered on Luke, Leia and Han after the Jedi Academy trilogy. Even those novels by K.J. Anderson seem to garner a lot of hate. One of these days I'll re-read them and see whether my enjoyment of them was due in part to me being only eight or nine when they came out. They were also the first EU novels I was exposed to. Back then I thought Kyp flying around with the Suncrusher and destroying solar systems was one of the cooler things that had been dreamed up.

Also, why on earth was Anthony Heald chosen to narrate so many of those books in the 90's? I was watching The Silence of the Lams last night and cannot believe he was picked to read most of the SW novels from Jedi Academy through the New Jedi Order.

Heir to the Empire was my second ever audiobook (after The Martian) and Thompson's work really drove me into listening to more of the audio versions.


I still haven't done the behind the scenes but it is on my list to do so after I finish my current book.

I'm not bothered by it. I liked a lot of the EU, but the vast majority of it was pretty bad. And the new continuity is still using a lot of concepts that were products of the EU anyway.

Given those choices, I went with ""I'm disapointed, but..." (although I doubt I will be able to see it on opening weekend), but it was a close decision between that and "I don't care..."

I enjoyed the EU, but it had become rather bloated and convoluted even for the readers, let alone the movie-only audience. Also, I never expected for a second that if they ever made Eps 7-9 that the EU would be adhered to. The EU was never really canon anyway, despite what some people claim. I always saw the Lucas "Tiered canon" approach as basically saying "canon until contradicted". Or, in other words, "Not canon". It was just a hook used to bring in readers to whom silly things like "canon" in a fictional universe actually means something. So, I understood and even expected the announcement that the EU was ending.

I thoroughly enjoyed Zahn's post-ROTJ trilogy ... but it's not necessary as canon. The EU had been become too unwieldy ... so it had to go. Now there are new possibilities. And that's an exciting idea. Hopefully the new stories will be at least as good.

The thing is, the old stories will always be there. There's nothing to stop me from re-reading and enjoying the Zahn trilogy after watching TFA and its two sequels.

So yeah ... out with the old, in with the new!

I enjoyed parts of the EU, didn't care for a lot, and am completely supportive of Disney starting it all over. It became so self-referencing and unwieldy that starting over was really the best move. They could hardly please all the fans that had read it and had their own preconceived notions of what was going to happen.

I'm sure that some day someone will adapt The Thrawn trilogy, or some variant thereof, for the screen. Until then, I can enjoy reading them whenever I like.

I can also enjoy the new films and the mystery of what's going to happen.
