February Challenge - The Newbie

Thank you for selecting Shore Patrol! as winning entry in last month's challenge. There were some excellent stories submitted - great job, everyone! Thanks also to DavidFalkayn for throwing the comedy gauntlet down for us!

The February challenge is "The Newbie." Entries should revolve around a character facing a new situation, e.g., a raw recruit on his/her/its first assignment, a captain assuming a new command, a seasoned starship veteran assigned shore or station duty, even retirement.

Givens and druthers: Word length 3000 words maximum. Any era of Star Trek is acceptable. You may choose canon characters, your own series' characters, or create new ones. Of course, you do not have to limit yourself to the Federation. There might be some good Klingon, Romulan or even Borg stories out there! The Challenge ends 11:59 PM, Central time, February 20. Sorry for the short contest, but the switchover for the BBS occurs on Feb. 23, so we need to wrap this one up quickly!

uh, again i raise the point:

the Vbulletin switches occures in 20 days. might be an idea to wrap this up before then. otherwise it makes life harder for Anthony, with him having to import over our stories and the challenge thread (IE this un)

either that, or no one posts their stories until after the switchover...

Alright, now THIS one might actually be easy! I can come up with a plethora of ideas for this (both with an original or a canon character.) Hopefully I'll actually submit something this time!

You know, your 500 story might have a bit in it you could use. Maybe a tightly focused short about his first "real" day in the "future" or something. The perspective of a 500 year old man encountering the Federation and United Earth society-maybe him being shown off at a cocktail party or something-could be quite good. And it would give you a chance to flesh the character out. Just a thought.

I am going to be away for a little while, including over the end of the challenge, and during the Big Board Move.
