February Art Challenge - Starscape

I've meant to try my hand at modelling aircraft in 3D for a while and this challenge seemed like the perfect opportunity to start, so I've been kept busy the last few weeks building a new 3D mesh for my entry.

I wanted to go for something a little unconventional so I decided to use an experimental design from the 1940's, the Miles Libellula M39b:

I didn't think I'd finish in time, but everything seems to finally come together tonight and here is my entry:

Now that looks good and almost as if im seeing it on the History Channel

Nice work. If I had the talent, I'd borrow a bit of your theme and have a bomber pilot on a mission to Europe staring out his cockpit window as the Big E ascends above the clouds.

:wtf:

Wow. I knew the Nazis had some pretty funky designs (not ugly, just different or way ahead of their time), but I didn't know the Allies had made some similar experiments. Mind you, I was a history major whose area of focus was WWII/Cold War, and I watch The History Channel religiously (alas, my cable company does not offer The Military Channel - yet, but I am hopeful).

Great choice of aircraft, fine job on the 3D aspect. Great entry to an already large list of great entries. This month is going to be tough.

Again - great job!!

Thanks guys!!! :D

I love WWII aircraft design, but I'm not particularly knowledgeable about the subject, I found a picture of the M39b while flicking through a book on the history of the RAF. While I was searching the web from more info I was surprised to find so many experimental designs from the same period.

Here's a great page I found by a guy who's built up quite a few physical models of experimental RAF designs: link
