Zubby’s day.
A tribble’s first TV interview
by Robert Scorpio
Unknown to the inhabitants of the Milky Way Galaxy, all was not as it seemed. There were hundreds of billions of worlds, zillions of life forms, and it all seemed so, well, organized. Little did those who live in the Milky Way realize? It was indeed, organized.
The Milky Way Galaxy was created by Zabdi. What was Zabdi? It was a world that thrived on entertainment, or more to the point, reality entertainment. That wasn’t always the case. The society was once really involved with scripted entertainment; Doctor shows, lawyer shows, and other genres, dominated the early years of programming.
Then it came; the debut of The Milky Way Galaxy. It was the ground breaking form in entertainment. Over one hundred channels, each with several dozens shows, all centered on the fictional Milky Way Galaxy.
The variety was really amazing. There were channels devoted to; sexual stories, action stories, drama, comedy, variety. In some rare cases, like the characters of Captain James T Kirk or Zifef Hmfeif, there were some who could appear on many channels at once. Their cross over ability was amazing.
Some of the shows featured large casts, or perhaps one star. The Zabdi were very entertained by the character of Q. Yes, there were several, but there was one who seemed to get into trouble on a weekly basis. They especially love the episodes where Q would meet up with Captain Picard, the star of another show. They were one of the best odd couples ever created, and many had hoped they would spin off into their own show.
The best part of the Milky Way network? The players were all CGI. There was no need for Zabdi, just CGI characters. This allowed the creators to create the strangest looking creatures. Creatures like; The Gorn-or Spiders-or the one creature that scared little Zabdi kids the most: the vile character of 7 of 9. Her very looks caused nightmares.
Tonight was the start of a new talk show. It was titled ‘Milky Tonight’. The host, Yimithzem, had started off as a small time comedian, and ‘Milky Tonight’ was his best shot at the big time. His body was rendered in CGI and this avatar would be injected into the Milky Network. A special program would pluck any character from any where in the Milky Way’s storyboard, and place them, in character, in a special room where Yimithzem could interview them.
After several weeks of promotion, it was time for the premier episode.
The studio audience is cheering loudly.
An announcer’s voice blared loudly, “Okay Zabdi!!! It is time for ‘Milky Tonight’!!”
A very large screen came down from the ceiling. Yimithzem could be seen sitting behind a very modern looking interview desk. He spoke to the camera.
“Thank you for joining us tonight!” Yimithzem. “Tonight is the first episode of Milky Tonight.” The crowd screamed in support.
“Many of you are fans of the Milky Way Network. With over three thousand shows to enjoy, the Milky Way Network is by far the biggest entertainment success of all time. Whether you’re a fan of shows that depict wars, like the recent KAof’gn war in the Gamma Quadrant,” he shifted in his seat and looked sad, “or the sad death of Ukgnth of the J19 alliance in the Beta Quadrant, Milky Way has something for you.”
He went on. “Our first guest tonight is a tribble named zubby.” The crowd went nuts. Zubby was the tribble that Kirk had sat on during one of the classic episodes of The Kirk Show. It was only a bit part, but it was had made Zubby a fan favorite.
The tribble materialized on the desk in front of Yimithzem. The tribble’s fur was a some what longer now, and he had taken up the disgusting hobby of smoking. A mouth piece was fitted onto the small fur-ball.
Yimithzem dug right into the interview. “Zubby, it is very good to see you.”
The tribble wiggled for the appreciative crowd. “Well, Yimithzem,” Zubby began, “I want to thank those fans of mine who keep sending me letters. It got be a bit part in one of those future KIRK SHOW episodes.”
Yimithzem cut in, “Yes, the one where the Kirk’s friend Spock is reborn.”
Zubby continued, “Yes. I had the brief cameo in the diner.”
The host laughed, “That’s right! That was you. You had a different fur style. So 80s.”
The interview lasted for twenty minutes. The crowd cheered as Zubby sang one of his songs. After the KIRK SHOW, the Milky Way Network let him spinoff into his own show, the long running THE ZUBBY COMEDY HOUR. It ran for nearly four years before Zubby’s unfortunate bout with drug addiction.
Yimithzem applauded with the crowd as Zubby rolled off the stage. The exuberant host turned to the screen for his final words.
“Thanks for watching the show. Next week we will have two very special guests. Many of you have been demanding that we bring back Balok, the little guy with the puppet.” The crowd’s cheering soared even louder. “We are going to have him and a new star from the Milky Way, Bak’ooth the Nausicaan!”
The crowd really went nuts.
