Fearful Symmetry: The question of authorship

When I first heard about the upcoming DS9 novel Fearful Symmetry - and God only knows how long ago that was! - the given author's name was (I believe) Leanna Morrow. Now that it's eventual release has been affirmatively established, now it appears that the author's name is Olivia Woods!

So...what's up? What's the situation? Who are Leanna Morrow and Olivia Woods? And what's the story with each of their involvements with Fearful Symmetry?

Just curious! :D

IIRC It was after/during the first delay that the author was changed. No official reason was given, though.

The first-announced author was unable, for some private reason, to complete her assignment. Since the DS9 Relaunch must continue, the book was rescheduled and another author was selected to write the story. :techman:

Not the first time it's happened.

The VOY-R is another excellent example.

Well, not exactly. The VGR Relaunch is being continued by Kirsten Beyer rather than Christie Golden, but it's not as if Kirsten is writing a specific book that was originally going to be written by Christie Golden.

The thing that really suprised me with this was the fact that they went from one new writer to another. I think it's cool that we get to experience a new author, but I just figured that since they had trouble with one newbie that they would have gone with someone who they already knew. I'm not trying to make any kind of judgement here, it just suprised me that's all.

You're not the only one who thought that. I was surprised as well to see another first timer after the first one appeared to not work out. Still, I'm hopeful for the outcome. It's got plenty of anticipation going for it and a fantastic immediate predecessor to follow up from.

Well, there's no evidence that there was any kind of "trouble" related to Leanna Morrow being a "newbie." There are plenty of reasons why a book might not work out that don't reflect negatively on the author's abilities.

I didn't mean that there was trouble because she was a new Trek writer, I simply meant that there was trouble and she was new.

Re: nice article

Yeah, the reasons behind it are not likely to ever be made public, and really are none of our business. Simply that one was not able for whatever reason to complete the assignment, so it was reassigned to someone else, hence at least part of the delay.

One cannot resist speculating, however, on how different the two books might have been. Obviously they'll both be working off the same loose idea, but the directions two different authors can take one idea are infinite.

Re: nice article

such speculation would be totally pointless though, at least to me, since neither author has published before so we have no idea what the non-published book was like. and it's highly unlikely we'll ever find out.

I suspect that we'll find out at about the same time the anonymous author in Prophecy and Change and J. Noah Kym are officially associated with their respective author(s).

No, I am J. Noah Kym!

i wonder if claiming to be j. noah kim and asking for a custom title would work? ;)
