Favourite Doctor Who Stories

All the lost stories are available as soundtracks and recons. Marco Polo, The Massacre & Power all make my list based on those.

Kinda
Power of the Daleks
Caves of Androzani
Invasion of the Dinosaurs
The Daemons

Isn't Power of the Daleks one of the lost stories?

Did you see the original broadcast in 1966?

No but I have heard the soundtrack/seen the recons/telesnaps/novelisation (Though I dont recommend Peel's effort tbh) enough times to put it in my top five.

I was going to leave it out because of that actually but decided to put it in because it is in my top five favourite bits of Who.

To avoid hopelessly comparing apples, oranges, & bananas; I'll do 6 top 5 lists:

Classic series, William Hartnell & Patrick Troughton years:
1. The Invasion
2. The Romans
3. The Seeds of Death
4. The Aztecs
5. The Daleks

3. The Three Doctors
4. The Pirate Planet
5. The Ark in Space

Except for just a couple Tom Baker episodes, I know only New Who. The favorites list can be taken in any order except for #1:

1. Blink - all time favorite.
2. When a Good Man Goes to War
3. The Empty Child / The doctor Dances
4. Doomsday
5. Stolen Earth / Journey's End
6. The Pandorica Opens / The Big Bang

It's hard to pin it down to just five and please forgive considering two parters as one episode.

I'm a big fan of a favorite scene or line and here are the ones I will watch a whole episode to see:

1. In Doomsday, from Rose letting go of the handle, being sucked into the Void to the end. Saying good-bye to the Doctor on the beach still brings tears to my eyes.
2. In Aliens of London: Rose moans about seeing it all, the size of it, and she can't say a word. Then the space ship flies overhead. Best line: "You're so gay!"
3. The Doctor Donna saves the world and towing Earth back to its rightful place in Journey's End.
5. Harriet Jones introduces herself to the Daleks who have come to kill her and they reply "Yes, we know who you are."
6. Any scene with Mickey. Noel Clarke can have you giggling at the slapstick, then bring you to tears a minute later.
7. The special clip of "Rose Meets the 10th Doctor." There had to be something between The Parting of the Ways and The Christmas Invasion or it wouldn't make sense.

Episodes I can't bear to watch:
1. The Girl Who Waited. Amy is not bitter and angry and I didn't like to see her portrayed that way.
2. Fear Her.
3. Night Terrors.
4. Daleks in Manhattan / Evolution of the Daleks
5. The Lazarus Experiment

  1. Destiny of the Daleks
  2. Meglos
  3. The Five Doctors
  4. The Caves of Androzani
  5. The Eleventh Hour
  6. The Lodger
  7. Human Nature/The Family of Blood
  8. Time And The Rani
  9. The Three Doctors
  10. Silver Nemesis
There were also stories from the First and Second Doctors that I liked, but it's been ages since I've seen them so my recollection of them is hazy. Essentially, there are plenty of stories from all of the Doctors that I've liked, including the '96 movie featuring the Eighth.

I'm very ambivalent about "The Girl Who Waited." Bitter, angry Amy makes sense given the circumstances and it's quite a heartbreaking story. However, I'm very unhappy with the rushed ending and the fact that Rory doesn't seem more pissed off about the whole thing. If I were Rory, at the end of that episode, I would say to the Doctor, "That's it. We're done. No ifs, ands, or buts. We're done. Take us home, now!"

However, I totally agree about "Fear Her." I hate that episode. I haven't watched it in years. Whenever I rewatch Season 2, I always skip over this one (as well as "Love & Monsters"). I can't stand the faint, whispery voice that the posessed girl uses for most of the episode. I also think the episode exposes Rose's weakness as a character. Once the Doctor is taken out of the equation, the show loses its signature energy and Rose lacks the necessary screen presence to replace it. It's also a severe problem for most of "The Christmas Invasion" (up until the last 20 minutes when the Doctor wakes up).

I like "Night Terrors," even if it is a little schmaltzy. At least the schmaltzy-ness here feels fairly appropriate to the story (as opposed to "The Curse of the Black Spot," where it completely derails an otherwise decent alien-haunting-pirates story).

"Daleks in Manhattan"/"Evolution of the Daleks" is probably the weakest of the new series Dalek stories. But when I rewatched it recently, it wasn't nearly as bad as I remembered. And I'm quite fond of Tallulah (even if her New Yawk accent is a little dodgy).:techman:

I wouldn't single out "The Lazarus Experiment" for special dishonor but I think it is a very typical example of some of the worst elements of the RTD era. Particularly, centering much of the episode around running up & down corridors while being chased by a dodgy CGI monster. (SEE ALSO: "Tooth & Claw," "School Reunion," & "The Next Doctor." The Cyber-King is a little different but it's the same principle, just louder.)
