There's a previous podcast thread but it hasn't been updated in a couple of years, so I thought I'd start a new one.

I'm planning a long road trip next month so I was wondering if anyone had any good Trek-themed podcasts to recommend for my travels. I'm open to either podcasts that recap episodes or ones that are more thematically based.

A lot of podcasts seem to be hosted by a pair of friends, one a huge Trekkie and the other who's never seen an episode. One that I've really enjoyed follows this format: Fascinating?, which covers TOS and is hosted by two Scots. Unfortunately I've found that many podcasts hosted by friends tend to get worse over time. They start focusing more on their personal lives and their kids and pets, and the show gets pushed into the background. There was one podcast I was listening to where they gabbed for an hour or more before getting into that week's episode.

I've enjoyed the Wang / McNeill Delta Flyers podcast too. I tried listening to 7th Rule, podcast hosted by Lofton and Eisenberg (before he passed away) and somehow I never really got into it. I should give it another shot though.

I'm open to any and all suggestions.

According to my app's history I've listened to a couple of episodes of this but I have no memory of it. I'll add it to my list and try it out.

Also, I just saw that there's a new official Star Trek podcast hosted by Tawny Newsome and Paul F. Tomkins called The Pod Directive. It was supposed to be out last year and was delayed for some reason. I'll put this one the list as well. The initial episode has Ben Stiller on as a guest, so I may actually start with the second one which features Reza Aslan.

I used to enjoy Mission Log, but as the new co-host is someone I knew and developed a serious dislike for back in the 90s, those days are over, I'm afraid.

That's a real shame. I'm not an avid listener and, tbh, didn't even know where was a new co host.

He came in in 2019, so not that long ago.

And it's fine. There are tons of other podcasts I can listen to. Heck, I can barely keep up with all of the ones I listen to now. :)

That's funny, because I developed a serious dislike for the former co-host, Ken Ray. I really enjoyed Mission Log until they started covering DS9, which Ken was clearly not a fan of. It goes without saying that he was under no obligation to like the show, but it was no fun listening to him so frequently sounding bored and miserable week after week, not to mention the one occasion in which he became totally pissed off.

Well, that's a very different thing than someone who personally did you dirt in your life, which is what happened in my case.

I just finished the road trip I mentioned at the top of this thread. 24 hours of driving over three days and a good part of that was spent listening to Trek podcasts.

Among the recap podcasts my favorites were Wang and McNeill's The Delta Flyers (Voyager), Fascinating? (TOS), and Rachel Watches Star Trek (TOS and TNG). That last one is done by a married couple with a great rapport and an interesting take on the show.

Another podcast I liked was the new The Pod Directive, which interviews famous people about their connection to Star Trek. The one with Reza Aslan was really interesting (he came up with a formalized definition of religion in part from watching "Darmok") and even the Ben Stiller one was pretty good.

The Trek.fm podcast The Orb (about DS9) was okay, but not a great choice for a long drive. The two hosts' voices were so soft and they spoke with so little intonation that I was on the verge of falling asleep.

I also tried the first episode of Reopening the Wormhole, another DS9 recap podcast, but only made it through about 20 minutes. It was just a few friends gabbing and very amateurishly done. I might eventually check out a much later episode just to see if they've gotten better.

Finally, I also checked out the Greatest Generation which I saw a few recommendations for on line. I really didn't like that one at all. The humor was very juvenile and they spent far too long talking about themselves rather than getting into the episode.

I have another long trip in December, so I may have more comments then.

The only one I consistently listen to is https://trekgeeks.com/ Bill and Dan do a wonderful job on the flagship show and their Discovering Trek show covers Discovery quite well. The network has about 10 shows now, but those are the two I listen t as soon as they drop each week.

Here are the Trek podcasts I listen to:

Infinite Diversity (Streaming Star Trek Universe review show)
All Good Things... (Old Star Trek Universe show)
The Expanse (Star Trek Enterprise Podcast)
Galaxy Class (Star Trek TNG Podcast)

I used to listen to Trek.fm but I didn't like the direction that network was going in, not to mention The Orb wouldn't come out very much. I tried Greatest Discovery and just didn't like the hosts at all, and there are some podcasts I stopped listening to because of the hosts.

I'll mention Positively Trek since I co-created and co-host it with Dan Gunther. We have episodes that come out weekly. Every Tuesday, we release the main show where we discuss Star Trek news and topics while also conducting interviews. When there are new episodes of Star Trek, we have an episode review show on Mondays. Every other Friday, we have a novel or comic review along with having the authors on. So there is an assortment of subjects, and you get 1-3 episodes in a week. And even though we have a positive attitude about Star Trek, that means that we respect it and don't trash on it. We can still be critical, but it's constructive while still expressing our love and respect for the creative work.

I've been a long time fan of the guys and gals over at Trekmate. What started as two fans with a microphone has evolved into a network of podcasts from around the globe. Whether its Previously, in the Alpha Quadrant from Scotland, or In the Wilderness from Australia, Trekmate has something for everyone and they're all positively potty about Star Trek.

On my latest road trip I tried out a few more podcasts, including some suggested above. One I enjoyed was Trek.fm's Standard Orbit. I had trouble getting through a few of the others. In general, if I'm listening to a Star Trek podcast, I want the participants to talk about Trek. I don't want to listen to long, boring discussions about their lives yet so many of these podcasts seem to start with ten minutes or more of irrelevant chitchat.

Also related podcasts Voyage to the Stars and Levar Burton Reads.

A 7th Rule and Delta Fliers here and there.

I want to get back to the new official podcast with Paul F Thompkins and Tawny Newsome; I only listened to the first episode; also Improvised Star Trek, which I fell off of a while ago.

I also watch Youtube videos a bit like podcasts such as Gallifrey Gals/Get Warped, Steve Shives, Certifiably Endgame, Red Letter Media, Geekvolution, To Boldly Watch, SaraiTrek, SF Debris, etc.

I will also pimp our podcast, Positively Trek, but I would be remiss if I didn't also mention Trek Untold, hosted by Matthew Kaplowitz. The premise is interviews with people involved with Trek production, both big names and smaller names with an emphasis on people who don't appear in the main credits. So, while he has recently interviewed Armin Shimerman for example, he also has terrific episodes with Julianne Grossman (Discovery's computer), Lycia Naff (Ensign Sonia Gomez), Erick Avari, and many more! It's definitely a terrific one to check out, I've become a big fan.
