Fun fact about the original: Most of the dialogue was actually lifted verbatim from a serious disaster flick, Zero Hour!. I'm not making that up. They took the script almost word-for-word and with very few changes, turned it into one of the greatest comedies in history...

I saw Zero Hour recently. There were some lines that surprised me. They were so awful and overwrought I was sure they were jokes (like, "I may bend your precious airplane, but I'll get it on the ground"). In fact, Airplane! addresses some serious structural problems in Zero Hour, making it a better movie even without the jokes.
