My favorite COMMUNICATOR & TRICORDER is the COMMUNICATOR from Enterprise and the TRICORDER from TNG.

Communicator from Enterprise - they're small enough to be believable as a descendant of modern satellite phones, and unlike a commbadge it (a) has controls and (b) can be held up to your head so you can have a quiet conversation without yelling to the entire room like a jerk. I think it's clear that commbadges were created before everyone realized how annoying it is to have people talking loudly to the air.

Tricorder from DS9/Voyager - like the TNG version, but slimmer. I like the Nemesis version, too.

One of the novels (Imzadi, possibly) has the notion of implanted com-badges - so you can carry on a private conversation in just such a fashion.

It nicely parallels the Feregi ear-mounted UTs as well (although I think Imzadi predates Little Green Men)

I like the Future combadges (seen in Endgame) and voy/ds9 tricorders. I don't think it's that annoying to have them, if one's used to them one can tune it out.
