Poll Favorite Christmas episodes

I didn't realize that the poll was for 3, so along with A Christmas Carol I added The Time of The Doctor and The Husbands of River Sing. Both are good episodes (THoRS a bit better then TToTD) that really stand out by having a few spectacular moments (I doubt any Doctor will have such an emotionally effecting, for me at least, regeneration scene as 11 at the end of TTotD and River realizing 12 was The Doctor was just great).

The One Doctor was promoted as a Christmas story when it was released in December 2002. The comedy is Mat Lucas's first Who work and it features a post-cretic scene of the Doctor and Mel playing Monopoly, and the Doctor wishes a Merry Christmas to the listeners.

Ah, I had forgotten about that...

...but then I seem to be in the vast minority for not enjoying The One Doctor. Didn't know Matt Lucas' work at the time, so I suppose I should give it another go considering how much I loved Nardole.

My actual three picks were Runaway Bride, Christmas Carol and Time of the Doctor. I liked Twice Upon a Time more than two of those, but I also lump it together with the season 10 two-part finale.

Then there's Cavan Scott/Mark Wright's other December Big Finish, Bang-Bang-a-Boom! (2002). It's a much less Christmassy take on Babylon 5 and Eurovision. It also saw the introduction of era-appropriate themes.

Big Finish didn't really do Christmas releases for Doctor Who after that. There may have been Christmas-themed stories, but they weren't promoted as real-world Christmas releases. They do release Christmas one-offs, often free downloads, of other series, though.

The only Christmas story that they did that resonated for me was The Chimes of Midnight. Mind you, it wasn't really a Christmas story, just one peripherally connected to Christmas.

I'd vote for The Chimes of Midnight, if it was included. Best Eighth Doctor story, solid classic.

I honestly didn't even think about the audios. Maybe next time I'll remember. It's a pity the current board platform doesn't allow for multiple questions. A few iterations ago (about ten years) did have that option and I used it all the time.

Though you should prepare yourself for kirk to come up and ruin the thread with endless complaining about "counting BF fan-fic crap" and such.

Also, I love how The Snowmen is, basically, an origin story for The Great Intelligence, and a smart prequel to its '60's stories, complete with the Doctor basically setting the stage for The Web of Fear. That said, I can't rank it high enough because the Clara stuff is simply insufferable, at least for me.

^ I actually adored Victorian-era Clara in this episode, and kinda wish she had ended up being the Doctor's new companion instead of contemporary Clara. Damn that ice lady!!

I don't see how she was different from regular Clara. She was on the nose, highly opinionated and fancied the Doctor. All common traits.

 

[Qonundrum]

apart from 'Twice Upon a Time" they're all either unmemorable or pompous. Some think they're better than regular series entries. Nothing wrong with either opinion.

A Christmas Carol was, actually, magical. And unmemorable? How was Donna's first story unmemorable? A giant spider that cocooned itself during Earth's formation... bonkers!
