Fleet Captain
Doctor Who has often explored alternate universes, or 'what could have been' timelines, including the most recent story. While the classic series did this on ocassion, the new series has done it almost every season, it seems. Any favorites?

The Land of Fiction (The Mind Robber)-Where fictional reactions seemingly come to life, controlled by a "Master" whose brain is hooked up to some computers.

The Inferno world (Inferno)-A dark alternate world where the world is a despotic society and also where a drilling project is turning men into greenish hairy beasts and causing volcanic eruptions. The Doctor uses this knowledge to save his own world which is also doing the drilling.

The Arthur's Legends were real universe (Battlefield)-We didn't really see this alternate world but we saw it had knights using a mix of archaic and scientific technology, as well as a version of the Doctor (Or possibly a future incarnation from our universe) who was better known as Merlin.

"Pete's world" (Season 2 and 4)-The world where Rose's father was still alive, the Cybus Cybermen were created, and where she eventually ended up-twice. Sort of has it's own Doctor now, although he has a more mortal life as well.

The Year that never was ruled by the Master(Season 3)-A world where the Master was supreme ruler along with the Toclafane. Undone by the Doctor.

"Turn Left" universe (Season 4)-Created by the Trickster's bug thingy, a world where the Doctor died because h never met Donna.

The No stars universe caused by the TARDIS (Season 5)-The TARDIS destroyed most of the universe with the 'total event collapse' (Possibly related to the effects of the TV movie when the Eye of Harmony was opened), with only Earth surviving. The Doctor fixed this by rebooting the universe and also closing the cracks.

The all-history happening at once universe (Season 6)-The latest alternate reality from the last story.

The Gallifreyan Matrix (Various)-Not sure if this counts, as the Gallifreyan Matrix is somewhat of a computer simulation, akin in some ways to the Matrix movies, but also in some ways Star trek's holodeck. Contains many potentially dangerous illusions.

Others I missed...

Has to be the Inferno world. LOVED the Brigade Leader. Funny how Who's good-guy-turned-baddie-in-a-parallel-world is clean shaven here, the opposite of Spock with a beard. And evil Liz Shaw still gives me shudders of pleasure decades after first seeing the program. It was a fun romp. Today, we'd have had an ep in that universe every year. I would have liked to see a Doctor in that world.

Somebody should write a sequel - even a book would do.

Oh, wait...

I don't agree with the Battlefield story being an alternate universe. There is nothing in that story to suggest it. There's a minor point involving currency, and another point involving there being a King on the throne. But that's not enough to base "alternate universe" on. Especially since the novels established that the Brigadier had his youth restored at one point (actually around the year 2010) - so Battlefield could happen 10 years or more from now. (And the Brig's death is left undated in the TV episode). If Battelfield is an alternate, then we'll have to make The Ambassadors of Death an alternate as well because it features a British space crew going to Mars or Jupiter (I forget) whereas The Christmas Invasion, set years later, has Britain sending its first space probe to Mars.

I voted for the "All History Happening at Once" universe just because a) it's cool, b) in this universe Amy is a sexy superspy whose office is on a train a la Jim West, c) the story is formatted in such a way that there's plenty of room for additional stories set in this alternate timeline to be told - maybe not involving the Doctor, but Amy, River, perhaps even past companions. I just find there's more flexibility to expand the narrative than some of the other alternates (with the exception of "The Year That Never Was" which was already expanded upon with The Story of Martha short story collection BBC Books put out).

The Lost Year or The Master Year along with series six's everything happening at once, time's been frozen reality.
