Fave Sci-Fi of the 70's

Oh yeah, the shows...
I vaguely remember a Planet of the Apes weekly show.
I would like to see the Logan's Run series. That might be a tough find.
Was it good?

The Planet of the Apes TV series is available on DVD. I don't believe the Logan's Run series has ever been officially released; I've got cheap bootleg DVD-Rs complete with TV commercials from WTBS airings in the 1990s. It wasn't all that great a series, partly because Gregory Harrison and Heather Menzies had about a tenth of the screen presence of Michael York and Jenny Agutter. Plus they added a new third lead character, Rem, an android played by Donald Moffett, and frequently the writers seemed more interested in Rem than in Logan and Jessica. I haven't even watched most of the DVD-Rs yet. I watched the series regularly on TV back around 1978 but wasn't all that impressed even then, and I didn't mourn its cancellation for very long.

Rem only became interesting when he was the tax collector in "Popeye".

"Twenty-five-cent up-to-no-good tax!"

Every 70's sci-fi I've seen outside of Star Wars has sucked huge hairy donkey balls, not to be to blunt about it.

Logan's Run, Planet of the Apes, Alien, Close Encounters, can't remember if 2001 was 70s, pretty sure it was...

Hell, even Star Trek TMP sucked. Though I can endure it.

But no, outside of Star Wars? No favorites. Just a lot of trash.

Hey, don't hold back. How do you really feel?

Just saw 'Silent Running'. I liked it. Good vibe. Music reminds of 'Soylent Green'. Guessing around the same time. This movie also reminded me of the Tom Hanks movie where he was stranded on an island with the basketball. ;)

Were 'Genesis II', 'Planet Earth' and 'Strange New World' a 3 part trilogy?

Never made the connection with Castaway, but I think you're right. Silent Running works for the most part because of Dern's performance (same for Castaway and Hanks). Otherwise, the message is a bit heavy handed and there are plot holes you could drop Saturn into.

All that being said, Silent Running is one of my all-time favorite movies and I bought the DVD the second it was released.

Dark Star

been meaning to get hold of a copy of that, was one of the shows that inspired Red Dwarf..

Dr Who - was a big fan when I was a child, Jon Pertwee was the first doctor I remember, then came along good old Tom Baker.....seemed to go downhill after he left... thats until its regeneration, great to see it back on top..

Alien
Star Wars
Planet of the apes
Six Million Dollar man - I always remember that strange musical effect they used to play when he was running :D

Dr Who is definately at the top of the list .:techman: Tom was my first doctor followed by Pertwee and Troughton.

Star Wars was another, and who can forget Alien. Alien by any standard has to be the quintessential representation of an alien. A breakthrough of the ideas of what makes a alien an alien.

Also on TV in the 70's there were...

Series:
The Starlost
Fantastic Journey
Quark
Logan's Run (series)
Moonbase 3 (BBC, 1973)
The Tomorrow People, (ITV, Great Britain, 1973)
The Man from Atlantis

And TV movies/pilots
The Questor Tapes
Genesis II
Planet Earth

You forgot:
-----------
The Six Million Dollar Man
The Bionic Woman
Gemeni Man
The Invisible Man
Strange New World (yet ANOTHER try by GR to sell the 'Genesis II' concept)
Buck Rogers in the 25th Century
Battlestar Galactica (TOS)

Where's all the love for "Holmes & Yo-yo"? :D Detective Yoyonovich has done TONS of Trek! (movies and episodes) and even played Draal on a couple of B5 episodes.

It was a cute show. We named a puppy after Yo-yo. Unlike the series, he lived to a ripe old age.

Yoyonovich fell victim to the Y2K bug....

In 1976!

I believe "Friends" paid tribute to the show when Joey auditioned for a comedy called "Mac & C.H.E.E.S.E." ;)

How about Filmation's live-action Saturday morning stuff?

Ark II
Jason of Star Command
Space Academy

Fun stuff. Recently picked-up Space Academy on DVD and it's an interesting bit of nostalgia. Would be interesting, I think, to do a sequel to Space Academy. Bring back the original cadets who would now be instructors for a new group of young cadets. I think with today's special effects and some more science-accurate writing, you could make a good Saturday morning show that could be both entertaining and maybe a bit educational, too.
