What are your favorite older sci-fi movies? I'm trying to catch up with watching some i may have missed. I like the vibe of some of the older movies even without the CGI. Alot of today's movies lack this and rely too much on CGI and efx to carry a movie.

Example of great vibe.

Omega Man
Soylent Green
Forbin Project
Andromeda Strain

I think there was a little known gem that came out in 1977. It was called Star Wars or something ;)

Logan's Run.

Others from the 1970s: Rollerball, Silent Running, some of the Planet of the Apes movies, Westworld, Futureworld...

Wow...... my favorites? Laying aside those already mentioned, I enjoyed Close Encounters of the Third Kind immensely. it had great effects for its time, engaging characters, a nice balance of suspense and drama with humor and wonder.

Wow...I haven't seen Silent Running.
I will try to find this. There seemed to be alot of
great dark horse movies that didn't do so well at the box office.
There were alot of doomsday type movies that were also good.

Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker era(s) Doctor Who

Close Encounters

Westworld

Planet of the Apes sequels and tv series

Logan's Run

Silent Running (recently released on HD DVD)

A lot of my favourites have already been mentioned. I also enjoyed Saturn 3 at the time. Well, it just edges into 1980, and it's pretty rubbish, but I remember enjoying it.

I don't think Capricorn One has been mentioned. That's a much better film.

Re: Fave Sci-Fi of the 70's/80's

Sweet. I haven't seen Doctor Who, Saturn 3, Capricorn One.
Its ok if the movies are in the 80's. Any classic/cult movie.
There were some apocalyptic type movies like Death Race 2000,
Mad Max, Damnation Alley. You guys remember those? ;)

Re: Fave Sci-Fi of the 70's/80's

The Terror of MechaGodzilla - the last of the original Godzilla films and one of the best, with a surprisingly horrific storyline (at this point, the series was being aimed at children) about a discredited scientist who willingly sells humanity out to conquering aliens and his daughter who becomes their tool (literally). Plus there's lots of Godzilla kicking the crap out of MechaGodzilla and his somewhat unmemorable dinosaur sidekick, that's nifty too.

Phase IV - a film I first encountered on the very early (non-cable) episodes of MST3K, this is actually a very interesting little film about normal-sized ants who acquire intelligence during some sort of odd cosmic event and begin to wage war against humanity, first fighting a pair of researchers sent to investigate the ants' actions.

The 70s are not my favorite decade for scifi films. Nor are the 80s. I have a lot more favorites from the 50s and 60s, if I were to list them I could go on for pages.

Re: Fave Sci-Fi of the 70's/80's

my gosh..no Death Race 2000?...

Wizards for animation.. and of course ST TMP...

Re: Fave Sci-Fi of the 70's/80's

I'd say Star Wars...if it was science fiction, that is.

So I'll say Alien, ST:TMP, THX:1138.

I'll second this one. Very creepy movie. I really liked the close-ups of the ants going about their business.

I really liked Damnation Alley too. I can't believe that its not out on dvd yet. It is very different from the book it was based on but I didn't like the book anyway.

Re: Fave Sci-Fi of the 70's/80's

There was actually very little sci-fi made in the 70s.

Star Wars was fantasy film.
Alien was horror movie.
Rollerball and Death Race 2000 were sports.
Star Trek: TMP was recycled TV.
THX-1138 was a comedy.
Westworld was a western.
And Soylent Green was a cooking show.

:p
