Starship Farragut’s “A Rock and a Hard Place” Wins Award at Film Festival

WASHINGTON, DC, June 1, 2009 — Starship Farragut, an independent film project based on the original series of Star Trek, won “Best Fan Film of 2009” at the Wrath of Con science fiction conference and film festival in Panama City Beach, Florida. Starship Farragut won the award for it latest film, “A Rock and a Hard Place,” and last year, won the same award for its second film, “For Want of a Nail.”

Film Synopsis: Captain Carter (John Broughton), despite objections from Chief Engineer Smithfield (Holly Bednar), decides to go on a planetary survey mission with an old flame. Things are not as they seem, and they soon realize that they are not the only ones interested in the planet. Other noteworthy performances by D.D. Hatcher (Lt. Commander Bishop), Eddie Lao (Klingon Borok), and Jamie Hanna (Klingon Commander). Special acknowledgements to Director Mark Hildebrand, Assistant Director Eric Lund, Director of Photography Michael Bednar, original musical score by Hetoreyn, sound by Bill Bame and Ralph Miller, and visual effects by NEO f/x.

“We’re honored to have been selected as Best Fan Film of 2009,” said John Broughton, creator and Executive Producer of the series. “This film has outstanding special effects, the debut of a full-scale shuttlecraft interior set, and fight scenes choreographed by renowned Hollywood stunt choreographer, Leslie Hoffman. With each film effort, we explore new filmmaking aspects with the goal of bringing Classic Trek…Now.”

Michael Bednar, Vice President of Farragut Films and Producer of the Starship Farragut project attended the event, stating, “The fan friendly approach to this project clearly differentiates us from other Internet film projects. We’re constantly receiving fan adulation for the quality of our film efforts and for providing the films for free.” Farragut’s 17-minute episode competed against other fan films at the three-day convention and film festival. Last year, Farragut Films debuted films three and four, “Just Passing Through” and “A Rock and a Hard Place.” Recently, Farragut Films unveiled Studio One in St. Marys, GA where the interior ship sets are located. Work is progressing on the remaining full 360 degree bridge set, which will be completed by 12/31/09. The project’s fifth and next episodic film will begin pre-production this fall with filming in early 2010 timeframe. In addition, NEO f/x’s production of Starship Farragut – The Animated Episodes will soon be released and features the voices of the Farragut crew in addition to well-known Star Trek guest stars, such as Tim Russ, Chase Masterson, and Chris Doohan (son of James “Scotty” Doohan).
