Farewall to a loyal and loving dog

Back in 1996 Jenna our German Shepard was starting to get on in years and we weren't sure how long we'd still have her. My brother decided we should get another dog and he decided on a Rottweiler. He went to a licenced breeder and picked out his dog. First week of December he brought home Magus age 6 weeks.

At first I was a bit concerned I because I'd heard of the reputation the Rotties have but Magus was never a problem - he was just a big sook. He spent the first 3 years with Jenna then there was time without. Then 3 and half years ago along came Bella (Shizuh Matlese-X) and those two got along like a house on fire.

There were various cats along the way and they were never a problem even one would wipe his bushy tail across Magus's nose.

But on Sunday night, aged approximately 12 and 1/2 Magus's time came to and end. He'd been a bit funny on Saturday so mum took him the vet but the vet couldn't find anything wrong. Saturday night he started to go downhill. Mum came home Sunday afternoon and he was sprawled in his kennel and couldn't wouldn't move, not interested in food or water. We'd been through something like this last year (on Mother's day which made is downer) a day later he was back to old self. This time it was different so it was time for the vet trip. Mum and my sister where with him as the vet gave the injection patting and stroking him but he was unresponsive.

In away it's a relief for mum because she doesn't have to worry about him when she's away for two months towards the end of the year but it's also not going to be the same without him. Now that we've all moved out it was just mum and the dogs. My sisters are both close by (I'm now living in Canada and my brother is in South Korea so having the dogs there was a comfort.

In this pic are 3 of his favourite things - Bella, his rope and his sleeping mat.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your good puppy dog. He was a good looking guy.

We're nearly in the same boat. We've got a black lab who's probably 13 or so and his hips aren't doing well. It takes him a couple of minutes to get up off the floor.

I dread the day when we have to take him.

Yes Magus was the same with the arthritis - though it didn't take him quite that long to get up.

Also meant walks up the hill became slower and he found them a bit harder but he was damned if he was going to give up his walks.

At least there are plenty of memories and lots of photos

Sorry to hear this Marc. Losing a valued member of the family like Magus is always tough. You have my sympathy and my condolences.

My condolences on the loss of your friend. He sounds like a very good pet. It's great that you guys gave him a nice home with lots of other pets to play with; he had a good, long life.

RIP, Magus. :(

I am very sorry to hear about your loss. They are family members and loving companions.

Mr Awe

Sorry to hear it. I had to take my guy in about 14 months ago after he had a stroke, I understand how you feel. :(

So sorry to hear of your loss. :( Losing a pet is the worst thing a person can go through cause they're like having family members. My Aunt was on her way to NYC Monday but she woke up to one of her dogs being dead. :( She was really upset about it. So she buried it out in her yard and left for her trip that evening.

Sorry about your loss, Marc. For what it's worth, it looks like he was a happy little guy.

Im sorry for your loss. He looked like a brilliant dog. :)

He was. Intelligent, loyal, loving and real character (though we never did work out how he managed to get his chain around his head into mouth)

And he proved what some-one once told me about Rotties - they're juvenile till they're senild - a puppy monster to the end.

thanks everybody for the thoughts.

I wanted to add my thoughts and condolences, as well. We actually lost our beloved lab (to cancer) about a year ago now, so I know what the loss feels like. But, he looks and sounds like a great pooch, and it sounds like you gave him a great life, and he you, I suspect. What dog or person can ask for more? Wherever he is now, I hope he's romping through fields and chasing spectral rabbits or something. Here's to you both!

My sympathies. :( Magus looked like a charmer.

It's excruciating to watch your pet's health slowly grind away, knowing that you're eventually going to have to make a decision you really don't want to make. You might know the time's coming for years, and still you aren't prepared when they go.

I lost my 16 year cocker in late April. I'm still tore up over it.
