Fantasy Life (3DS)

One or two of you people has a 3DS, don't you? :p

I got this on Saturday and have already sunk 8 hours into it. That is pretty unusual for me.

The game mechanics would be at home in a Monster Hunter or an Elder Scrolls. It's a straight-up RPG, which a story that usually stays out of the way so you can do quests and build your skills. It has 12 "Lives," which are analogous to what other RPGs call jobs. Each Life offers unique abilities: Anglers can catch fish, Woodcutters can chop down trees, Tailors can make clothes, Cooks can cook food, etc. The nice thing is, all the Lives are opened up for you pretty early, you can switch at will, and any skills you develop for a given Life persist no matter which Life you're currently set to.

The game has a colorful and cute art style and is absolutely loaded with jokes and puns. I'm not kidding, whoever did the localization of this must have had a blast. A lot of the jokes are actually funny, too, which is kind of surprising. :p

You can also co-op which is great fun. Have a bunch of quests and challenges you want to do, then go off together and have at it. You can't turn in quests or challenges while network linked, which is slightly annoying, but since turning multiplayer on and off is so quick and easy, it's not that bad. There's also an Ally Mode where you can chat with other players (not very practical: messages are too short and typing on the screen sucks) and receive updates about their progress and send them "applause" (this is fun.)

The game world is quite large so there's plenty to explore and find. Some of the Lives even require some skill to use effectively. I'm currently a Mercenary, which is based around melee attacks. There are very powerful attacks you can chain with proper timing.

Save points are ubiquitous so you'll never find yourself hunting around for a place to save. Not sure why they don't let you save pretty much anywhere since virtually every map has a save point on it. It's definitely a game that you can pick up, play for a few minutes, then put down again. Or, you can let the hours get sucked away, like I have...

Just thought I would give this one a recommendation for you guys. It just came out Friday and I'm definitely hooked. Not a lot of games grab me like this so there must be something to it. :techman:

Urgh, small screen experiences :p

ETA: Seriously though, it certainly sounds compelling. Would consider playing it on a Wii U ;)

I've shut down my 3DS gaming pending purchase of one of the new models with the sweet headtracking that keeps the 3D from breaking when you make a tiny movement one way or the other.

Sorry, I need the magic, the magic of 3D without special glasses. I pity those that did A Link Between Worlds... flat...

I keep the 3d off. Don't need to use it to enjoy the game :).

As for Fantasy Life, I've heard of it. Might look into getting it someday.

Yeah, I haven't used the 3D since the day I bought my 3DS. It doesn't add anything to the experience, you have to play perfectly still, and it drains the battery faster. I'll stick with flat.

As for Fantasy Life, it looks cool, but not my type of game.

Fantasy Life 2 has been announced as an exclusive for smartphones.

Fantasy Life isn't my sort of game, but it's sad to see such a popular game that millions enjoyed get reduced to a cheap F2P mobile game. I know how that feels. I'm a Breath of Fire fan.

Heard about that :(. It's a real bummer. Wish they would have it be available on regular handhelds as well. Not everyone games via smartphones.

Meh, I don't care about Freemium as a business model as long as it's done tastefully, which one can but hope Nintendo will enforce.

Woah sorry there buddy, I was posting in two kinda similar threads here and on GAF at the same time. Not a great idea when you're in a hurry

Disregard the Nintendo thing.

Edit: I stand by my freemium comment, though. It can be done right, but I'll agree with you that it's generally worrying when a franchise or game switches to that model.

Yeah, I don't have much faith a freemium version of Fantasy Life will be anything but crap. :/ I mean, I get it from an economic standpoint, but it almost always results in a lesser game.

Well, that's disappointing - I'm really enjoying Fantasy Life right now and I would be interested in a sequel as a regular game, not a "free"-to-play game.

It sounds like they're doing the same kind of thing with the Professor Layton series too. Although there was already a mobile game in the Layton universe, the model it used was a few chapters available for free and then in-app purchases for additional chapters in the story. I think that is ok.

As a fan of the Layton games I should be upset, but there's already six games in the franchise (seven if you count the Phoenix Wright crossover), so it's hard to complain about being left in the cold. Besides, I'm sure they'll make another traditional Layton game eventually.
