Fans of Birth of the Federation and the 4x genre

I noticed on the 'Next great Trek game' thread alot of people would like another 4x genre ST game in the same mold as Birth of the Federation.

So I think I'll post this in the interests of furthering publicity for my own Star Trek mods for Distant Worlds.

First of all, don't let the fact that it's 2D put you off, it's a very cool game.

I've done mods for :-

An Archer era (Enterprise series) - http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2562947

Kirk era (TOS series) - http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2619128

Spock era (motion pictures) - http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2709511

TNG era - http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2497781

Check them out, see what you think and feel free to ask questions.

The game isn't cheap, but if you like a space empire building strategy game, you won't be disappointed.

How is Distant Worlds more like The Star Trek "universe" than Armada 2526, Galactic Civilizations 2, or Space Empires 5? I haven't played it yet, but I'm considering purchasing. If I do, I'll definately try your Star Trek mods. Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't say it's more or less similar to Star Trek than any of those titles.

I'd say it's an improvement on what GalCiv 2 and SE5 did. Those are both good games, though I didn't play SE5 very much (didn't have the time for it).

Haven't played 2526 yet, but I hear many good things about it.

If I were to choose something that feels very Trek like about Distant Worlds, I'd have to go with the size and nature of the galaxy. It feels like your in space, not some hex on a map.

The map can have up to 1400 stars. Most of which have planets, some of which have moons, and they all rotate around one another in a realistic way. There are nebulae, supernovae and dangerous regions, with electrical storms. And it all plays out in real time.

With automation, you can also choose to control as much, or as little as you like. From controlling every fleet and every ground troop batalion, to setting everything to the AI and taking a lone ship on patrol yourself.

Real-time was also a great idea by the dev. You can set the game to 5 speed settings or pause. This gives you as much time as you think you need (which I don't always get right). Rather than being turn based, where I always follow a set routine, check my colonies income, build queues, check my research development, check my military dispostion, etc. then hit 'turn'. This can get kind of repetive after a while.

It's a great game, and it's a shame they don't advertise it as much as 2526 (it's from the same publisher). So, I guess that's why I'm here talking about it. :)
