fanfiction.net

ff.net is pretty good, although it's sometimes wonky and I think it could use an upgrade. That's where I post my stories (in Star Trek TOS and 2009).

But if you're posting Trek fic, be warned that it's the romance stories with traditional ships like Spock/Uhura and Kirk/Spock that will get you the most traffic.

If you're not a romance writer, you probably won't get nearly as many hits or reviews, even if your stories are superior. I'm saying this because many people judge how good stories are by how many reviews they receive, even if it's not always true.

Interesting you should say that. My most popular story is a Love Hina series that goes against the fan-fave pairings, which is to say, canon K/N, while my Kirk/Uhura Romance struggles to leave 100 hits per month. The next one after LH is a Highlander Horsemen fic about how Methos left. I don't know whether the LH one supports what you said or goes against it, since K/N is almost a dead letter among some fans.

Battlestar Galactica. 100% action and adventure.

I hate romance/shipper stories and would never write one.

As a writer, I like ff.net because it allows you to post chapters to a working site, and edit them before you publish. You can have up to (I think) 15 chapters in your story manager, which makes it easier to bounce back and forth among them and check story continuity. You just have to edit them every 60 days in order to keep them active. Then you can publish as quickly or gradually as you like. This is really helpful if you work on more than one computer - you just access the site itself and make your updates. If you care about getting lots of reviews, you'll also want to post to a smaller, fan-based site (where everyone comments on everyone else's stuff all the time), because most stories on ff.net get limited reviews.

As a reader, I like the sheer volume of stuff. Yes, some of it's (imo) rubbish, but you can just tool around and find some gems, even discover new fandoms. You can filter to completed stories only (no WIPs), and by character (not 'ships, though), and you can sort through other people's favorites lists to find stuff that suits your tastes.

So, yeah, I'd recommend ff.net as an archive.

You can filter WIP on FF.net. Just go to one of the archive pages and click the dropdown box that says status and click on in-progress.

Isn't that what I just said?
