Hypothetical question: If a Hendrix, Elton John, Mick Jagger, Janis Joplin, Frank Sinatra, Steve Perry, Sammy Hagar, etc were teens, but sounded like they do as adults, would they have a shot at winning American Idol today?

They would find it hard but even if they were to win they would have no credibility. Shows like Amercan Idol and The X factor can only make the teeny pop singer types famous because people who like real music hate these shows and pour scorn on those who compete. People who like to listen to the kind of spoon fed music that Miss Lewis performs would enjoy it from singers they like whether they came from one of these shows or not.
I am happy these shows exist because they cause real bands to fight harder and as people get more and more sick of them and move onto new reality tv shows real music gains new fans.
These shows will never find a Bowie, Lennon or a Hendrix because real talent has no need for them. They are just game shows and that is all the will ever be.

I really doubt it. The show is really looking to find the next teen star. A cookie cutter star, more bland tasteless music that appeals only to pre-teen to early teens. And from the looks of this season, it'll be pre-teen and early teen girls.

While I agree with what you say. It is possible for a real musician to win, however unlikely that may seem, because there is a public vote. On the German version for example a recent winner had ben in a band. However when he won he found he could only release stuff for the teenie bopper market having been ostrasized by people who buy real music as a sell out.
Like i say when it comes down to it shops like Pop Idol and The X Factor are Game Shows that want to make money for the men in the grey suits. They on't do it because they love music the only love money and they are quite happy to feed us this 'Soma' to get it.
From what I've seen of AI, Sinatra, Perry, and Hagar, would definitely have a good shot at winning. Jimi would not, probably because he is truly unique. Elton might go far because of likeability, but not win, same for Joplin.
But this isn't saying anything about the show. These artists as well as other pop icons were rejected by better judges of talent than the folks who vote for the Idols and the Idol judges.
