Fallout 3 looks rubbish on PS3

"Our exclusive Fallout 3 PS3 review (from PSM3#107) has leaked onto the Internet and, as expected, a single sentence has been dragged out, beaten and interrogated under a spotlight. This one; "The PS3 version compares poorly to its Xbox and PC counterparts." Which, in the parlance of the Internet, obviously means; "THE PS3 VERSION SUCKS! XBOX WINS! ANOTHER CRAPPY PORT!" But that isn't the case. The PS3 version just looks SLIGHTLY WORSE than the other versions.

The PC version of Fallout 3 is gorgeous. The colours are vivid, the draw distance is endless, the textures are high-res and the lighting effects are beautifully subtle, especially when you're gazing over the Capital Wasteland at sunset. It's the best-looking of the three.

The Xbox 360 version's textures are noticeably rougher than on PC, and objects in the distance aren't quite as clear. It does, however, boast an impressively solid frame rate. The game is, otherwise, identical.

NOW, the PS3 version looks the same as on Xbox, but things in the distance are slightly jaggier/rougher, the textures seem 'muddier' up-close and the frame rate is choppier, especially during the last few story missions (which may be the same on Xbox, but we've not seen the equivalent scenes to comment). We won't spoil anything, but the set-pieces here are MASSIVE, and the engine quivers under the weight of what's happening.

So, really, the difference between the Xbox and PS3 versions won't hamper your enjoyment of the game in ANY WAY. High-res textures or not, it's still the same huge, epic, absorbing, brilliant adventure.

And if you're bothered by a slightly inferior frame rate and fractionally blurrier textures, then perhaps, yes, you'd best buy the Xbox version, leaving the rest of us to enjoy an almost-identical, equally brilliant, game on PS3, while you smugly inspect concrete textures at terrifyingly close range to reap the full benefit, rather than, say, losing yourself in a 100 hour epic quest in an evocative post-apocalypse. Or having fun.

Good night.

Andy Kelly (the one who reviewed Fallout 3, and finished it on PS3.)"

Wow! I must say I'm surprised to read this.
Lately it seems like the devs have gotten the PS3 port over problems solved.
From what I understand most of all the multi stuff has been pretty identical with the exception of the stuff that went PS2/PS3.
From what I've read it's like a split.
Makes the PS2 version looks a little better and the PS3 a little worse.

And before the attacks start, I really am surprised so don't start. :p

How does "The PS3 version just looks SLIGHTLY WORSE than the other versions" and "slightly inferior frame rate and fractionally blurrier textures" equate to "rubbish on PS3"?

Is it true there are no trophies on the PS3 version?

No trophies ... no DLC (that Xbox and PC are getting) ... allegedly "muddier" textures.

Oof.

I'm getting the PC version, anyway.

Because it's on the PS3, end of story. If these issues were reversed, the 360 version would obviously not be called rubbish by him.

So according to this, if the PS3 version looks rubbish then the Xbox 360 version must also look rubbish, eh?

Pkerr swings and misses! Strike!

Fail.

Ya might wanna get with your fellow PS3-ers and Llaystation magazine. ;)

Its so nice when my fanclub shows up.

I wonder if it's just that they had to turn down some features to optimize for less RAM.

As for the DLC, I get the sinking feeling that half a year from now we'll get a GOTY edition with all the stuff on it. At that point, it's technically not DLC anymore. :p

Eh - who cares? If it looks not quite as good on PS3, but is otherwise still a great title, then fine. If you own both consoles, maybe you lean toward 360 or PC. If the author thinks it's rubbish, so what? There are plenty of people that will be willing to crap on some aspect of numerous games in relation to what console they love/hate. Let 'em have their diatribes. Most of us can pick out the useful aspects of reviews and sift through the irrelevant console hype.

Fail.

Hence my insertion of quotation marks around the bit that I quoted :)

Strike two!

Um, yeah. And if you meet me by the back gates after school we can sort this out once and for all!

Its so nice when my fanclub shows up.

'Give us an X!' :D

Meanwhile, Fallout 3 launches in Australia on 30th October. Apparently missing some druggy bits, because drugs are bad. I haven't decided yet if I'm getting the 360 version or the PS3 version, or whether I'm going to shelve it until 09.

I wonder if it's just that they had to turn down some features to optimize for less RAM.

That's likely it; the difference in RAM configurations of the two consoles gives different restraints on what a game can do. The 360 can have higher texture sizes but at the expense of non-texture related things as it has 512mb of pooled RAM, whereas the PS3 has 256mb for system and for video.

But the author doesn't think it's rubbish! :p

I am actually very surprised that both Systems have such low RAM. 1GB was cheap when they came out.

I remember when CliffyB took credit for forcing MS to install more RAM in the system to accommodate Gears of War. I think he said it cost them half a billion or some such.
I also remember Major Nelson and e being really pissy about that comment around the time Epic was complaining that MS was charging for maps they wanted to give away for free, but whatever.

I'm guessing that RAM cost is probably the one thing they can't control on the production side, so they went with the minimum possible and left it at that. I suppose there's also the whole planned obsolescence thing as well.

Yeah the 360 was originally only going to have 256 MB of RAM before Epic convinced them to up it to 512.

Also the 360 has GDDR3 RAM, which is designed for videocards and is more expensive then normal RAM.

Um, yeah. And if you meet me by the back gates after school we can sort this out once and for all!

Hmm... lets see.
It's you and One..Two...Three...Four...Five. Five of your friends.

So six against one.

Looks a bit uneven.....

You might wanna go get more friends....That is, if you have any. ;)

A PS3 killed my grandma and blew up my house. What reason do YOU have for hating the PS3? :p
