Exploding Consoles Of Doom Explained At Last

How come then, that the consoles can explode, killing the user...but continue to be perfectly useable for the replacement operator?

Bridge consoles that are manned during a battle or emergency must be vital to the ship.

If the ship is destroyed because the consoles don't function everyone in the crew could be killed.

Thus the consoles must be designed to get rid of excess energy during a surge in the way that is the safest possible - for the consoles. Even if that means killing whoever is at the consoles.

Yeah, I'm generally pretty lenient on the occasional necro thread (since I understand that sometimes leads to new conversation), but in this case it's better to just start a newer one. ;)
