This morning, the internet is a-buzz with word that a high-quality blockbuster action sequel, The Expendables 3, has somehow been leaked online. While we here at Flickering Myth don’t condone piracy or illegal downloading, it is still something that is very much in the public domain, and this is perhaps the most high profile leak to happen over recent years.

With Comic-Con in full swing in the US, the news that a major film, which is being represented at the festival, has leaked online before its world bow will be a massive blow to distributors Lionsgate, who were hoping this would be a decent moneymaker for them. Whether it affects the film’s cinema release and its box office taking remains to be seen.

There hasn’t been this high-profile a film leak since X-Men Origins: Wolverine back in 2009, when a work-print of the film, which was finished bar some missing CGI, was released online weeks before it’s opening.

Apparently more than 100,000 copies have already been downloaded on the first day already. I'm actualy surprised this doesn't happen more often with Hollywood movies, with so many people getting a hold of the complete movie before the actual release and such lax security.

Will this hurt how much the movies makes?

That is not what you said. What you said is "Making it a headline on a public forum is a form of publicity."

What is your actual argument, and what stake do you have in this? I admit, I am curious about your overreaction. I may have missed it, but I do not recall you raising similar arguments during the discussion about the leaked Doctor Who episode or scripts. Or did you address those concerns privately, perhaps? If not then, why does this topic outweigh that one?

Haven't seen the first two, it's unlikely I will ever watch he third unless I am tricked or forced into doing so.

(Forced of course could mean that the remote control is too far away from where I am laying down... But that's more about being betrayed by the length of my arms.)

Yeah, that immediately jumped out at me as a really poor choice of words given the subject matter of the article. I get that they were going for "The illegal copy is available to the public to download" but saying it's in the "public domain" comes across as tacitly supporting it.
