Even Pike had a better send-off.

I was watching "The Menagerie" (both parts) the other week and now I am currently watching Star Trek:Generations, and I keep thinking how badly Kirk's send-off was. I like Generations as a film, but I never understood why one of the greatest Captains in Starfleet history died by simply "falling off a bridge." Yes, he was battling Soran, but for a lowsy reason. If Spock was in this film he would of made sure Kirk got a proper burial, or at least a proper goodbye.

He did for Pike! In "The Menagerie" Spock bothers to take the time to hi-jack the Enterprise just so he could see that Pike could be happy instead of vegatating in a wheelchair he can barely move in. I think Spock would of taken Kirk's body in Generations and at least transported it back to Earth for a popular burial.

Ugh, sometimes I wonder where these writers get their ideas.

I agree. Fighting on an empty planet to save a bunch of Veridians we've never even seen. Not very dramatic.

Kirk's official death, saving the Enterprise-B was better. And you're right, burying Kirk on that empty planet made absolutely no sense.

The body of one of the Federation's most celebrated heroes left on some empty planet in the middle of nowhere? Take him back to Earth and give him full military honors with phaser salutes and whatever. I'm sure it would be big news to the Federation public

^They may hide this, to avoid flocks of depressed Federates flocking to the nexus.

I actually like the idea of burying Kirk on Veridian. After all the guy made space exploration and discovering new worlds his life, it seems only fitting that he rests in the cosmos, one one of those planets which his efforts helped be discovered. In fact, I suspect this is how he would want to be buried.

Besides, I'm sure there's some eye-catching memorial to him somewhere on Earth. Probably in Riverside, Iowa. So it's not as if he's been totally ignored.

If you read the so-called "Shatnerverse" Star Trek novels, you'll know the body doesn't stay buried under rocks in the desert for too long.

Also, how do we know there's even a body under Picard's little cairn of rocks. It's not really big enough to be concealing a human body. Maybe it's just a stack of rocks with a Starfleet insignia badge on top, and the body was destined to return to Earth with Picard?

I agree. Kirk's death by falling was really disappointing. They might as well have just had him die by slipping on the soap in the bathtub.

Not to mention lugging William Shatner up a mountain would be pretty low on anyone's priority list.

Actually, I have. I really liked them. I should read more Trek books, but I haven't been able to sit and read anymore like I used to.

^ Yeah, I love the Shatnerverse novels, too. I got a blast out of "The Academy", his own Kirk & Spock origin story.

Burying Kirk on Veridian I can just about see. Picard hauling his carcass up a bloody mountain to do it is just ludicrous though!
