After losing the oldest Astronaunt at the end of last year, we start the new year with the man to this point who walked on the moon passing away. Eugene Cernan passed away Monday at the age of 82. Not only was he the last man on the moon, he also spent more time than anyone else. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-01-17/eugene-cernana-nasa-astronaut-dies-aged-82/8187242
I saw this earlier; very sad. I just re-read his book last year and it's great; highly recommended. RIP Gene Cernan
If I'm not missing any, of the twelve who walked on the Moon still alive are: Buzz Aldrin (Apollo 11) Al Bean (Apollo 12) David Scott (Apollo 15) John Young (Apollo 16) Charlie Duke (Apollo 16) Harrison Schmitt (Apollo 17) Schmitt would point out he was the 12th person to set foot on the Moon and so has at least as good a claim to being the last person (so far) to walk on the moon. Of Apollo astronauts who didn't walk on the Moon there's still: Walter Cunningham (Apollo 7) Frank Borman (Apollo 8) Jim Lovell (Apollo 8, 13) Bill Anders (Apollo 8) Tom Stafford (Apollo 9) Michael Collins (Apollo 11) Dick Gordon (Apollo 12) Fred Haise (Apollo 13) Al Worden (Apollo 15) Ken Mattingly (Apollo 16) The Apollo 8 and 16 crews seem to be the only ones that are fully still with us. The Apollo 14 crew is the only one whose all members have died.
Cernan had come here to my city to study the surrounding rocks as part of the crew's geological training for the mission. By studying those rocks, they hoped it would give them insight on what to look for on the moon. http://www.cbc.ca/radio/undertheinfluence/selling-the-moon-part-ii-1.2937359
Sad, sad news. Rest in peace Captain Cernan. Trump, McConnell & Ryan - you'd better give NASA the money it needs to go back to the Moon and on to Mars before any more of these guys die. I didn't know that Stu Roosa of Apollo 14 had died . Edit: Just checked Roosa's entry on Wikipedia, not only has he died but he died a very long time ago (1994), on my birthday no less. I could swear he was still alive.
Nebusj, You're a little off on Apollo 9 and 10: unless I've missed some news both crews (McDivitt, Scott, Schweickert) and (Stafford, Young, Cernan) were all alive until this news. Schweickert was interviewed about Cernan yesterday. Of the Skylab and ASTP Apollo crews, I think they're all around except Pete Conrad and Deke Slayton.
