Esau

Endymion

Captain
Captain
I'm hearing that's what they're calling the guy Jacob was talking to in the beginning of the episode. In the Bible, Esau was Jacob's brother. From their scenes together, I got that vibe that there's some sort of brother relationship, yin yang thing between them.

Did they call him Esau in the episode? I didn't remember that he had a name, but it's good enough for me, gotta call him something. I had a definite eerie feeling about those two guys. They are either immortal antagonists, or aliens. :D

I've seen that actor everywhere - he was briefly in Prison Break and had a major role on Deadwood. And Jacob was on Dexter. Gotta admit that having recognizable actors is a bit distracting, but hey I guess they gotta work.

I remember "Esau" from Voyager's "Equinox".

They didn't call him that in the episode, I'm just seeing it pop up on message boards. And I loved him in Deadwood.

You know what really strikes me, the introduction of Esau and the relationship with Jacob, effectively addresses and even sort of answers about 80% of the mysterious happenings, stuff in the past like Claire's pen not working, almost supernatural things happening in their past and present to nudge our characters towards the island.

We still need more detail on the relationship between Esau/Jacob (are they biblical brothers? an angel and a devil? Two aliens creating a snow globe testing simulator?) and how they appear in different times, etc, but the broad strokes have been defined. The bet/competition between two apparently omnipotent beings does explain a lot.

THe last big mystery I think is, what exactly is the Smoke Monster in relation to Esau and why's it so mechanical, and some of the intracacies/point of the time travelling, what role do the time travelling Losties have with what's happening in 'present day'?

The way Jacob & "Esau" spoke....it sounded like modern speech, despite the Black Rock sailing in...i wonder if they are also part of a time loop...where they are from the present/future, but are the beginning of the weird interctions with the Island & the rest of the world.

Sinc Jacob wore white & Esau black...it seems Esau is related to the Smoke Monster, maybe even Smokey.

Now, is Esau stuck on the Island? We haven't seen him leave yet, while Jacob's been all over.

That adds to my Smokey theory...maybe Jacob & Esau each have specific powers/attributes?

I can easily sign on to Esau being Lostzilla.

I just occurs to me he kills those that don't fit into his loophole plans or have the mark of Jacob. I'll have to ponder this a bit more. What do you all think?

I haven't seen either of those shows, so, they weren't so recognizable to me.

Ahh..., that's why Lostzilla didn't kill Locke. He had "the mark of Jacob". Hmmm...

My theory is that they sort of exist "outside" of conventional time and can go back and forth more or less at will.

In fact, I believe that maybe Jacob went back to young Kate/Sawyer/Juliet/Jack, etc etc retroactively. He figured out what "Esau" was up to and retroactively jumped back to mark/nudge these folks as his saviors.

Someone on this board suggested Jaboc sent the 70s Losties back in time to set in course the events of the incident, and that this is Jacob's answer to Esau's "loophole." Interesting theory. We have nine months to stew in it.
