Attending the Niagara Falls Comic-Con this past weekend, I learned something new to me: Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters, Oz) said he had auditioned for the role of Sisko in Deep Sapce Nine.
He didn't go into it too deeply, except to say that he was called back in again. "We really like Ernie. We'd like to have him come in again. Can he be more sexy this time?"
Ernie stated he didn't know what to make about that directive, and he sorta felt bad for not being considered "sexy". He even asked the crowd if they thought Avery Brooks was "sexy", albeit a bit tongue-in-cheek.
What say you all? Good choice for Sisko? Hudson's "working man" personna and his actual history as a single dad may have lent themselves to an interesting take. However, I couldn't see the writers taking Sisko the same direction that did with Brooks. Brooks as the son of "wormhole gods" may not have played with a different actor, as Brooks, while having a dynamic range, has a bit of an "aloof" quality to him.
Hudson seems like a genuinely likable guy, and I'm sure he would have happily embraced Trek-fandom.
