The character was originally called "Elizabeth Janeway", after the famous writer of the same name. However, after Geneviève Bujold was cast, Bujold requested the character to be renamed "Nicole Janeway". Bujold, who had mainly feature film experience and was not prepared for the schedules demanded by series television, dropped out on the second day of filming on the pilot episode "Caretaker". Kate Mulgrew, who had previously auditioned for the role, was brought in. She suggested that the name be changed to "Kathryn".[1] Actresses Erin Gray and Chelsea Field also auditioned for the role

I think she'd of made a very hot captain.

Erin Gray is a very lovely actor but I can't help but feel she wouldn't have lent the same flintiness to Janeway as Mulgrew. I think Mulgrew totally owned the character.

Erin Grey would have made me think of 'Silver Spoons' and 'Buck Rogers.' Not what I'd really want for my Voyager Captain. She'd have been a fine alternate, but I think I'd have preferred Sue Dibny to Erin Grey (or generally, a relative unknown.) On the other hand, I wonder what Mary McDonnell as Janeway would have been like?

Kate Mulgrew made me think Katharine Hepburn (circa 'Philadelphia Story') in space. Amazingly, that worked for me.

I remember a film of Erin Grey, where she played a top model who learned that with a certain age she has to look for other opportunities. And thinking of that film, I am sure she would have been a great captain.
