Erasure's First Contact theme

Hi board. Been a while.

Anyway, I was researching something the other day and came across something I had never known or heard about. I'm a casual fan of the group Erasure, and read they were contracted to do the theme for First Contact, but their song was rejected.

It was included on a CD of remixes. An instrumental and vocal version.

There are videos on YouTube of both. Here's the link to the instrumental: http://youtube.com/watch?v=sVBQJ-0o2Qo

I wonder how this would've gone over. I'd love to see a video of this song using clips from the movie. Would do it myself if I had the skill.

Fascinating, I've never heard of that before. I'm a sort of mild fan of Erasure - I saw them in concert in the early '90s and it was one of the wildest shows I've ever seen.

I agree, though, that the track doesn't seem very appropriate to First Contact.

Still, an interesting find for sure. I'm still waiting for the Enterprise techno theme that was supposedly record by the band Woven for the third season to emerge. (Supposedly Berman rejected it at the last minute and used a more upbeat remix of "Faith of the Heart" instead.)

This would have been horribly out of place in First Contact.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

The song itself was fine. I'm sure that it would have been rescored with a full orchestra if chosen, but this version is fine.

The opening credits were sleep-inducing to begin with, not including the lame TFF-ripoff music. It reminds me of fucking homecoming or something, not exploration of universe.

But I guess I haven't destroyed enough of my brain cells to appreciate the Lord of all Trek films. Perhaps if I down a whole bottle of Wild Turkey Rare Breed (102 proof) I might actually sit though the whole thing for a change.

Maybe if they had used this it would've taken some heat off of Faith of the Heart. There would have been some sort of precedent. ;)

We got anyone in the house skilled or inclined to whip together a video with this song?

For some reason this techno-sounding beat made me think that it would be appropriate for a Star Trekkified version of the Terminator.

Maybe if the movie had more space battles - like Nemesis, but with Borg - this tune might have worked better. ? I remember some were hoping for more of that stuff in this movie than they got in the quick opening battle.

Sorry, but I think the opening music to First Contact is probably some of the finest music written for any Trek film. Obviously you disagree. But I found it quite effective as a contrast to the more strident mood of most of the film. It was an interesting and wonderful choice, and it's a great composition.

But don't listen to me. My degree in music with an emphasis on composition, work as a professional musician, and years of being a star trek fan mean I'm probably not qualified to give my opinion on this topic. I guess I've lost a few too many brain cells.

Apparently you have, considering that I was calling the film itself terrible, not the music. Perhaps you should use your impeccable skills at projection and show off PowerPoint presentations.

Oh yes, I'm a singer myself, so don't try pulling the credential reach-around bullshit with me. Play it straight.

You almost covered your ass here. Not bad! :techman:

If you don't like the fact that I declare the film is shit, say so. Don't pretend that your own biases are fact, no matter what you have framed on your den wall.

Uh, excuse me: The opening credits were sleep-inducing to begin with, not including the lame TFF-ripoff music. It reminds me of fucking homecoming or something, not exploration of universe. ---- You

I don't care whether you like the movie or not. I was criticizing your criticism of the MUSIC, and I wouldn't have even done that except that you decided to cast your whole post in terms derisive towards those who disagree (the whole brain cells thing).

Yeah, they're not facts. They're my opinions. I have legitimate reasons for having them, I can say that I speak from a position of at least some knowledge, but the main point is that I wasn't criticizing you for your opinion really, just the silly way you decided to present it. Don't get all up in arms when someone calls you on your rudeness.

Also, it's framed on my bedroom wall, not my den wall. :P

Dude, let's just be honest here: the OBVIOUS implication of "But I guess I haven't destroyed enough of my brain cells to appreciate the Lord of all Trek films. Perhaps if I down a whole bottle of Wild Turkey Rare Breed (102 proof) I might actually sit though the whole thing for a change." is that you need to be dumber to appreciate this movie, therefore people that appreciate it are dumber than you. Since your statement is in the context of a discussion about FC's main theme, that was what I was addressing. And since I'm certainly not dumb, and on top of that have some experience in music, I thought it was important to point out that your statement regarding that was garbage. Like or don't like whatever you choose, but don't expect that when you say things in that sort of way, people aren't going to call you on it.

:wtf:

Which part of First Contact would they use this bit in?

"Captain...please...help"

Cue music. Picard shoots Ensign and starts raving.

I'm with Star Treks on this one; I don't think this suitable for the film. The original by Goldsmith is up on par with that of the previous' films soundtracks.

Guys, just telling you...keep it cool, okay? I don't want to give out infractions today, so keep it civil. Thank you.

That was the first time
I saw you in the undergrowth
You only heard the voices in the wind
Then came the next time
They called me to the great unknown
A transformation changing everything

It was my first and only
Encounter with the outer reaches of space
You send them through my heart

They called me to the great unknown
A transformation changing everything

You send them through my heart

Where'd you find those? Those lyrics are terrible. They're worse than even the worst James Bond song.

On the other hand, they would be keeping with Trek tradition... Roddenberry's lyrics for Sandy Courage's TOS theme song were pretty bad too. :p
