Episode Rankings 1-98

Rear Admiral
I just finished going through the series for the second time, and I thought I would share with you my personal ranking of the episodes and various statistical trivia. Please chime in with agreement, disagreement, and thoughts about the episodes.

Note: The episodes in the "Bad" category have a redeeming feature or two after the episode title and number. Those episodes don't work for me as a whole, but certain elements are worth watching again. I could use some help coming up with something good about "Vanishing Point" and adding any other nice scenes, effects shots, or moments from those shows. Thanks in advance for any help in this area.

I don't necessarily agree on an episode-to-episode basis, but I do agree with your general, overall assessments of each season.

"Damage"...'bad'? Whoa.

It's only there because I dislike the actions taken in it by T'Pol and Archer. I quite like the episode from a plotting and storytelling standpoint. That's why it's the highest in that group.

There are enough hours of Trek that I can afford to be picky about what goes into my personal continuity. "Damage" is one casualty of that philosophy.

Rating key:
Excellent: Strong characterization and/or an engaging plot.
Good: Good character development, entertaining plot.
Good but flawed: Moments of weakness in the writing or development of the storyline.
Fair: Leaves me indifferent. I won't avoid watching but I won't go out of my way to watch either.
Bad with good moments: Bad moments a good time to go make popcorn.
Just bad: I'll watch only under duress.

Although others have not, I would put "The Shipment" in the excellent group. Archer at this best. His scenes with Gralik are very well written and acted. Lots of good tension there, and a very satisfying ending that gets referenced down the road.

I thought The Shipment was a bit too talky. And the MACOs weren't terribly useful.
I thought Gralik was a good character and I wish we had gotten to see him again, even briefly. That was one problem about Enterprise: too many good characters left behind.

I'm shocked that "Dear Doctor" was only "fair". Personally I thought it was one of the best episodes of the entire series.

First time I saw it, I thought it was a great episode. So much at stake. Lots of dramatic tension between Phlox and Archer, and the interest Cutler was taking in Phlox was neat.

But upon subsequent viewings and further reflection, I decided the conclusion is troublesome.

The extinction of the Valakians was not necessary to the future evolution of the ascending Menk (since the Menk were obviously advancing even in their current, stunted environment).

Phlox could have cured the Valakians and he and Archer could have advised them of the Menk evolution and urged them to truly help the Menk in their growth by neither helping nor hindering them.

I had problems with their conclusions too, but after thinking about it, I decided that even though I didn't agree with it, I still liked the episode because it actually got me to think and have an emotional stake in the episodes outcome.

Actually, I just reviewed my list... I have Dear Doctor listed as "Good but flawed."

Man, season 4 rocked. I still feel robbed.

S3 AND S4 rocked, IMHO. The were cancelled as they really hit their creative stride. Totally unfair to the fans, but the studio understandably felt the ratings were hard to argue with. Damn.

I'm going to have to disagree with you about season 3. It got a bit out of control with the season long story arc and I think that was one of the bigger reasons that people stopped watching. It was a good season to develop Malcolm Reed though, and Archer was more of a bad-ass.

I think season 3 rocked when they stayed on-topic. When they did episodes that added little -- or worse, nothing -- to the search for the Xindi (here's my list: Extinction, Exile, Rajiin, Carpenter Street, North Star (which I liked, just not plunked down in the middle of this season), Hatchery and Doctor's Orders) not so much.

I disagree about "Exile" not adding to the arc. The crew did find out some information about the Xindi, and both Hoshi and Archer were spending the whole episode in pursuit of that goal. What the writers chose to do or not do with the information recovered should not be held against the episode.

By the way, I have yet to get any answers about "Vanishing Point." If I don't hear any other thoughts, I'll just use the very beginning before the transport as my piece to watch of that episode.
