ENTER: Misc Avatar Contest: "Temples"

In recognition of our ongoing Thread about religious beliefs, the theme of this contest will be your favorite temple. This can be anything from the local Jewish temple in your neighborhood to a Russian mosque to a Japanese Zen temple to an ancient Mayan ruin. The term temple extends to any place of worship, from a modest Wiccan Magic Circle to the cathedral of Notre Dame. Ancient sites whose purpose is still debated, such as Stonehenge, are also acceptable.

No media images for this contest, please.

To kick things off, I will enter an image of the incredible Angkor Wat:

Now go forth, ye pilgrims, and meet your maker. And bring 'em back alive.

Central Pentecostal Tabernacle, in Edmonton, Alberta, being demolished in 2007.

Now...before anyone gets offended that I would post an image of a church being demolished: this avatar is seriously intended, as a memorial.

Central Pentecostal was a striking modernist building, and a landmark in my hometown. I have fond memories of going to see the Singing Christmas tree, as a child:

And my grown-up feelings about Christianity aside, I was disappointed to hear that the building was being demolished.

Last I heard, the site is still a vacant lot: a developer was planning to build condos, but went bankrupt. Typical stupidity and philistinism.

^^ That's an impressive tree. What a shame about the building.

Great entries, everyone. We've got quite a variety so far already.

Aw, no media? I wanted to post the Temple of Gozer! :p

I'll have to go with a classic beauty, Chichen Itza:

I know! :D
There were many, but this one has a very particular lighting to it, that makes it a bit eerie and all Indiana-Jones-like, or maybe even End-of-the-World-like.

This almost certainly won't win, but I had to do it. It is, after all, the most important religious building in English Canada.

Monks Mound is the largest Pre-Columbian earthwork in America north of Mesoamerica. Located at the Cahokia Mounds UNESCO World Heritage Site near Collinsville, Illinois, its size was calculated in 1988 as about 100 feet (30 m) high, 955 feet (291 m) long including the access ramp at the southern end, and 775 feet (236 m) wide.[1] This makes Monks Mound roughly the same size at its base as the Great Pyramid of Giza (13.1 acres / 5.3 hectares). Its base circumference is larger than the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan.

Yeah, the lighting and sky are perfect.

For a second, I thought your sig was part of the Avatar. :rommie:

I can already see I'm going to have difficulty deciding for whom to vote. Very impressive entries.
