 Wowee! Your humble contest runner is thrilled to pieces! Thank you all for the votes. :D

Alrighty then, onward we go...

The next episode is Carbon Creek, the story of the Vulcans' real first encounter with humans on Earth. ;)

For the Theme, let's go with Blending In: any of our crew in some kind of costume to move among the natives on an away mission. Enterprise only for source material, folks.

And for Random Theme, how about I, Robot: robots, androids, mechanical men, you get the idea. No cyborgs, please. Any SF/F source is game.

I'll put up the voting threads (assuming I figure out how) on Friday evening, PST. If anyone needs more time, just PM me.

Now let's see some avatars! Have fun!

What are the specifics for this contest regarding file size and avatar size? I just thought I should ask because of the new 140x140 max size and the different file sizes allowed for different ranks.

140x140, 70kb for anybody?

Thanks, Defcon--it's been so long since I've run one o' these (cue the violins  ) that I plumb forgot about the new avatar parameters for the shiny new board.

I'm not clear on the different file sizes for different ranks...getting way too complicated for me. Where do we simpletons (and, erhm, contest runners) find out more? Is there a FAQ yet? I can hardly find my way around here as it is. :alien:

As for the contest, if more senior members would be able to enter bigger, prettier avatars in the contest... :wtf: ...that doesn't seem fair. Mayhap we should keep the maximum size the same for everyone, no matter the rank. If everyone can do 60k, 140x140, those are the parameters I would set for the contest.

Also, sorry for the double post, but I haven't had time to investigate the multiple quote function yet either. Jeez, I feel like I'm back in school again, and behind on homework.

OK, here we are:

Might this count?
Great av, JiNX, but Trip in an Enterprise EV suit isn't exactly the same as the "dressing up in native costumes to blend in" concept I was going for. Do you have any other ideas?

But he's undercover in Romulan space! He was surgically altered to pass as a Rommie!

eta: this is from the cover of The Good That Men Do. If it has to be a tv episode, I'm good with that.

Mmmyeah, except the people who did the book cover didn't make him look like a Romulan. He looks like good ol' Trip to me--lookit the curvy eyebrows. I assume the source photo was taken from the Romulan/Andorian arc.

Now, if he'd been in a Romulan EV suit, or the picture made him look like he'd had his surgery... Whatever. Let's be safe and go with an episode, 'kay? T'anks. :)

...and now you're rethinking those votes you cast last week, eh?... :rommie:

Okay, I went and read all I could find in QSF about avatars, and everybody gets 140x140, so GO FOR IT, KIDS, but as for the 70k size, I still can't tell if that's across the board or rank-related, or whether some poor newbies are still relegated to 20k animated gifs, or what all. Gah! So until I learn more, we'll put a 70k size max on all avatars this week. And if anybody can pass on some wisdom, it would be appreciated. :D

JiNX, your new av...

kalysto, your '50s TV episode av is great!
and I was a major fan of AstroBoy, so I really really hate you for being the one who thought of it. :p;)

Well, my current max. filesize is 20kb and it seems to have more to do with post count, than seniority/regdate, since I'm a member here for almost 5 years. I have used this restriction when creating my entries this week, but I certainly wouldn't be against a rule that allows 60kb or 70kb for everyone, if it is no requirement to actually being able to wear your entries. :)

I don't think we've ever had that requirement. I guess there was a time when the SF&F contest in General SciFi and Fantasy had the requirement, but not anymore.

I don't see why they have the different limits anyway. It's confusing and I still haven't found a clarification of who gets to post the big avs (file size) and who has to stick to smaller ones. I can't imagine an animated av working very well at 20kb.

^^ Also, I haven't seen a differentiation in size limits between still and animated avatars anywhere, like we had before.

Since the different limits for different ranks looks like the way it's going to be, it seems to be a good idea to have size limits that are contest-specific.

So! 140x140, 70kb for both still and animated? Okay with everybody?

I'm back! I'm actually entering avs this week.
