ENGINES OF DESTINY

Hi there.

I had been hearing a lot positive things about the novel "Engines of Destiny". So I finally bought it last month.

Now I'm 3/4 through and have decided to put the book aside (which I've never done with any Star Trek novel). Somehow, I just can't get into it and don't really care for the story. It's as if the story is barely moving forward and nothing is happening in the book.

Am I the only one with this problem?

Nope, you're not. While I did make it through the whole book, it was a massive slog for me to read (I've only ever not completed two books and in both cases it was because I was unable to follow the plot anymore).

The book was full of plot holes and in places was completely non nonsensical, but I think the most disappointing thing for me was the ending (which I won't spoil), because it seemed to make no sense to me, while also wrapping things up in my least favourite way for a time travel story.

I bought into the premise and got the novel. To this day, I consider it one of my least favorite Trek novels due to the characterizations (mostly Scotty and Guinan) and the actual plot.

ya i got that book after a few years of going, eh maybe someday. I got it and read it. it seemed VERY non scotty and i didnt like the way kirk was portrayed either. besides that i had no idea who the bad guys were and why anything that went on caused the borg to be all over the place. its on the bottom end of my books too

Am I the only person who liked this book? I mean sure, Kirk-revival stories are getting old, but still, I thought this particular one was good.

Nope, I enjoyed the book as well. I thought it was a great Scotty book, showing how he dealt with the death of Kirk and his transition into the 24th century. And with his renewed spirit at the end of the book, I think it makes a good prelude to the SCE series, showing how he goes from a man out of time in Relics, to the head of the SCE by the end of the Dominion War.

I liked it as well. Pretty soon after starting I realized it was going to be a big reset at the end but I had a good time getting there.

I do have a question have a question about what it's related to, although I was actually wondering about The Future Begins, not Destiny.

I'm glad you asked. Engines of Destiny gets a couple mentions in The Future Begins-- it's one step on Scotty's journey that began in "Relics" and culminates in tFB.

Cool, I hope to get there someday. But I've only read about 6 SCE stories the past couple years, so I it might take a while LOL. Don't worry, I do hope to get moving through them faster, I've just been trying to get caught up with some of the other series before I went back to SCE.
