Empire's fifty greatest animated characters

Flying Spaghetti Monster

Vice Admiral
Admiral
here

This cheered me up. As I browsed through the list from 50, I though, as I got deeper into, closer to number one, I thought they had not considered my favorite animated character, as he is a bit of an off-beat character.

Turns out he's number one!

I have renewed faith in humanity!

They included that fucking Gromit, but not Stitch or Toothless? And Mickey Mouse as the very last one on the list?

Whoever came up with that list is a moron.

Im just glad the Iron Giant is there. Hell, just reading their vague description of the last act made me all sad.

Woody Allen's Ant from Ants?!?

WTF?!?

Fucking Horace Horsecollar should be in this before some lame CGI ant. Perhaps he WAS but who the hell has the time to click 50 damned links and I'm not even Gen Y? Those irritating little c***s will look at 50 links and exclaim, "Send it to my Iphone or I don't care!!!"

Why don't they just list them all?

Lists like this are always disappointing as they're riddled with glaring omissions. I like Wallace & Gromit, but Gromit being number one is obviously just bias from Empire being a British magazine. No way in hell he's the greatest animated film character.

And if they're going to put Daffy Duck there for the two Looney Tunes movies, they need to have Bugs Bunny too. I actually like Daffy more, but Bugs is just as worthy. I'm sure Daffy would be overjoyed that he's there and Bugs isn't, though. He finally got the upper hand on that despicable rabbit. :D

Didn't recognise all on the list but still think it was pretty terrible. Sometimes I swear they just put a bunch of names in a hat and pull them out one by one to decide the order.

has to be said, any list which includes Daffy and ignores Bugs and puts in Mickey and ignores Donald is inherently flawed.

also, can't belive they didn't include Po, Mater, Scrat or anyone from The Incredibles.

More like 50 random animated characters from films.

They should have named it "Our 50 favorite animated movie characters", then you could argue what your favorite would be but you really couldn't argue with the list since it was there favorites.

He's not my favorite character, but how the fuck is Bugs Bunny not number one (let alone left off the list completely)? That's like doing the 50 greatest rock bands of all time and leaving off the Beatles.

Well, I don't think that the list is based on cultural significance.

I will say that Gromit is my favorite animated character. He's not as culturally significant as bugs, or Mickey or many others.

But in terms of why he is an interesting character, I agree with the list completely. There is so much to the character. And yet, they make him so fully developed, so fully emotional by often doing so little. You know exactly what he's thinking. They don't need to exaggerate with him. When he is nervous or apprehensive, they don't need to show him shake about or bite his nails, often in such moments, he can be perfectly still.

Yeah, Gromit is one of my favorite characters ever, not just animated.

Why Woody, rather than Buzz, at number 2? Maybe it's just me, but I thought Buzz was the character that stood out in those movies.

Bender should be number 1 and does count because he was in 4 direct to DVD movies (i.e. films).

Bugs should be 2, the rest I don't know.

I haven't ever called a list like this a fail before because I can generally agree with them while disagreeing on some points, but this list really does seem like they randomly pulled some names out of a hat. Fail.

If you don't want to do what's required, then don't complain about the result.:vulcan:

To you, maybe not. But to millions around the world, Gromit is one of the great animated film characters. Not everybody's going to know or care about Bugs or daffy, especially since the cartoons aren't shown on TV all the time, and also not everybody's going to just vote for an American character, either.

Please remember that this is the personal list of the person writing it, and not your list. To paraphrase:

Honestly - its the article writer's choices. No matter how impartial they try to be, it's incredibly unlikely their choices would match anyone else's - film is an art form and 'best' is equal to 'favorite', which is not measurable or definable by any scale. Stop crying.

Even when these kind of top 50 lists are voted for by the readers people inevitably disagree and whine that the list is terrible. You've only to look at the top listings of films on IMDB to realize that majority rule can be a terrible thing! Like what you like, and let other people like what they like!
