Emotional Spock?

Considering the fact that Spock was portrayed as an emotional character in "The Cage", and to a lesser extent in "WNMHGB", how do you think he should be played in the movie?

Of course, Number One's characteristics were given to Spock after Roddenberry dropped the character -- but that performance is "on the record". Is it important for continuity's sake to play Spock the same way, or is hitting the "reset" button OK?

There are enough things that didn't follow through from the Cage and WNMHGB that it doesn't really bother me if emotional Spock is one of them.
On the other hand, it may be a way to make Spock seem 'younger', less in control of his human side.

Fans are aware of Spock's emotional nuances. But most folks who are aware of him (besides perhaps thinking of him as "Dr. Spock") know him as emotionless (or nearly so).
If this movie is supposed to have broad appeal, then that is the Spock they'd expect to see.

I think it'd be far more poignant to see the older Spock (Nimoy) be more emotional and more comfortable showing emotion than the younger Spock (Quinto) is.

I think Nimoy Spock will be more in touch with his human side, but Quinto Spock will be at a point where he is very conflicted by his two sides. From the fist season of TOS, Spock was very conflicted by his dual heritage, only by that time he had learned to mostly subdue it. Since this movie takes place before any of that, it only makes sense that Quinto Spock would be a more emotionally conflicted person.

^ Ah yes, older emotional Spock roasting marshmellons by the fire with some baked beans and a glass of McCoy's secret ingredient telling the the tale.

/And the younger Spock starts eating the brains of the crew to gain their knowledge and powers.

^ hmm... the episode "Spock's Brain" is taking on more of a sinister nuance now that I think of it.

I think Quinto talked about this once. about how to show Spock's emotional evolution from what he might have been pre-Cage to post-Cage. either way, it'd be interesting to see what they do and where they take it.

I GUESS IF I USED ALL CAPS AND AN ATTENTION GETTING THREAD TITLE, THIS THREAD WOULDN'T HAVE DIED AT THE HANDS OF A SHOUTING SPOCK COPYCAT!!!

Oh, well. I'll settle for this being the "thinking fan's thread" on the subject. :p

I see Spock as a guy who TRIES to be emotionless. A half human half Vulcan, who outwardly pretends he is all vulcan. however he can't help it - he feels "Illogical" emotions of friendship and loyalty to Kirk, I'd like to see that touched upon in the movie. Perhaps a big moment where the "logical" thing to do is to leave kirk behind or to die somewhere, but his emotions push him to save Jim, that sort of thing.

but if they address in the movie perhaps by the older nimoy spock.

why did he transition away from the younger vulcan who actually smiled.

The younger Spock did smile at the pretty flowers (he always did have a hippy streak in him) but he was, as we saw, a bit high-strung to say the least. So he began to embrace his Vulcan heritage more, seeking to stabilize his inner struggle. Without friends like Kirk and McCoy, we can see that Spock for a long time had a tendency to over-suppress his humanity. He reaches his most "alienated" state going into TMP. After his journey through death and rebirth, he has that brief and hilarious time of reacclimating in STIV and after that seems a much more balanced individual.
