Elisabeth Shue to replace Marg Helgenberger on CSI

The description of Shue's incoming character sounds interesting, though it's a pity the article doesn't give any specifics on why she'll be replacing Catherine.

I really like Elizabeth Shue and can't stand Marg Heglecrone, so I might have to start watching alternate-reality crime-scene investigations again, where the real cops defer to CSIs, who handle every single aspect of a case: first response, crime scene processing, evidence analysis, witness interviews, suspect interrogations, clear buildings without SWAT or uniform backup, get in shoot-outs, make arrests, and make deals for the DAs office without consulting said office, etc. You know, technician stuff.

Could be interesting. I think this leaves George Eads (Nick), Robert David Hall(Al) and Jorga Fox (Sara) as the only remaining members of the show's original main cast. They've been planting the seeds of Marg (Catherine's) farewell in the last few eps anyway.

I'm liking the current Ted Danson stuff, he's a bit of a Grissom clone but the show has lightened up a bit after the overly dark and "Dexterlite" Laurence Fishburne/Bill Irwin story arc IMO.
That's good to hear about Ted Danson's part :). I might try and catch up on it sometime if I can.

As for Elisabeth Shue, it'll be a wait and see thing there.

Jorja Fox is back as a regular, but she has barely any screen time. I'm not really familiar with Elizabeth Shue, but I'm gonna miss Marg no matter what.

I think they are rotating the actors giving the CSI grunts bye weeks. My wife complained bitterly that Delco was missing from Miami Sunday night, when the last time I watched it with her Eva La Rue was missing tech. Have they ever explained Sara's LDR with Grissom or are they not together anymore?

As for Marg every time they mention her showgirl past I think of K.C. from KC.

They're still together, it's just oddly complicated. Grissom did appear on Skype last year.

Eva LaRue had her episode total cut by several episodes.

On the other hand, Columbo did that for years. With one exception, they always revealed who the killer was at the beginning of each ep. It wasn't about figuring out whodunnit, but watching Columbo methodically dismantle yet another "perfect" murder--while the cocky guest-star villain slowly realized they were in trouble.

Which was a fun gimmick for a tongue in cheek detective series, but really ruined a months-long, suspenseful, crime drama. (Oh god, I hope you didn't write that, Greg - I don't mean to be insulting).

First - Marg is still gorgeous for a woman her age (which I appreciate more, being around her age).

Second - yeah, it's pretty ridiculous how much they do. I have an online friend who's a detective in the south. His reaction is, "Our crime scene techs better stay the hell away from my crime scene until I'm finished with my investigation!" And I think he said something about defenestration if they even go NEAR a suspect.

Regarding the detectives:
One of the long-running detectives, Vega, turned vigilante and was killed off recently.

I wonder if they'll revisit Squeequl, one of the stranger bad guys from last season.

Don't worry. I've never written any tv episodes, just a couple of the CSI novels.

My mother loves the original CSI and watches it religiously.

My father is a 35 year police vet.

She tries to avoid watching when he's home, since it becomes a one-man riff-track as he jokes and rips into everything they're doing wrong.

...and Margle-rock, the CSI gremlin, was OK at one point, like twenty years ago.

The real CSI is no where near as bad as the spinoffs for the CSIs doing cop stuff. Jim Brass was on the show from the pilot precisely as an excuse for their presence in the interviews. The really wacky stuff is the ruthless excision of all the boring parts of the lab work, including ambiguous results, but especially the bland assumption that the cops really order all this lab work for every case.

Which brings up a delicate point regarding distaste for CSI on the part of cops and cop lovers. The standard TV cop is dedicated to truth and justice and is a heroic exemplar of each. In fact, cops have been deplorably prone to testilying and planting evidence and prompting snitches to lie, while the prosecutors overcharge to terrify victims into phony pleas for fear of the consequences. One reason for resentment of CSI is that it sets up a standard of justice that appears to be unreasonable.

That's pretty much a problem with all police shows - they hardly ever show how dirty the profession can truly be at times. Not every cop is an exemplar of truth, justice and the American way, more's the pity.
